Sunday Silence (left) won the first two legs of the Triple Crown in 1989. Although Easy Goer was the favorite entering the Derby, Sunday Silence handled the muddy conditions better. Yet Easy Goer (right) remained the betting favorite for the Preakness (shown here) and even led down the stretch, only to lose by a nose. While Easy Goer was finally cast as an underdog in the Belmont, he justified his previously high expectations with an easy victory over his rival, denying him the Triple Crown. Regardless, Sunday Silence had the last laugh when he returned to the role of underdog in the Breeders' Cup Classic, their final matchup, and held onto the lead despite a threatening late run from his foe.
