In 2007, three horses separated themselves from the pack. First seeing each other in the Kentucky Derby, Street Sense (below) came from behind to defeat Hard Spun, with Curlin (top) finishing third. The three met again at the Preakness, and Curlin leapfrogged the two to finish first, beating Street Sense by a nose in a thriller. Street Sense did not run in the Belmont, spoiling the chance to have the top three horses from both the Derby and the Preakness run in the Belmont for the first time. The three met for a final time in the Breeders' Cup Classic that year, with Curlin taking the crown, Hard Spun placing, and Street Sense finishing fourth.
