Sired by Alydar, Alysheba (left) had rivalry in his blood. But unlike his sire, he was on the winning end of it, battling to victory in two of the most intense races ever, the 1987 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. In the Derby, Alysheba persevered despite almost having his jockey knocked off by Bet Twice midway through, and prevailed by a half-length. The Preakness was similarly thrilling, with Alysheba taking the lead down the stretch to win by the same margin. The Belmont was a different story, and Bet Twice made sure there was no come-from-behind win, dominating the race by 14 lengths while Alysheba finished fourth, forced to race without the drug Lasix due to New York state racing law.
