Some remember Affirmed (right) as the last horse to win the Triple Crown, in 1978, while others do so for his 10 clashes with Alydar, of which he won seven. Affirmed won the first meeting, the Youthful Stakes at Belmont Park, with Alydar finishing fifth; this would mark the only face-off in which the pair would not take the top two spots. As 2-year-olds, they met six times, with Alydar only winning the Great American Stakes and the Champagne Stakes. After Affirmed won all three Crown events, with Alydar becoming the first horse to finish second in all three (including the Belmont Stakes, shown here), they had a final showdown at the Travers at Saratoga. While Affirmed finished first, he cut off Alydar going for the rail and was disqualified.
