Facing just four foes in a scratched-down field, Touchuponastar and regular rider Tim Thornton set sail for the lead after breaking sharply and beat second choice Hall of Fame to the first turn. Thornton sat stock still as his mount went a half mile in a manageable 47.20. And at the three-eighths pole, Thornton knew he was a winner of Saturday's New Orleans Classic at Fair Grounds.
Sierra Leone, not to put too fine a point on it, is among the best horses to run in the New Orleans Classic. Last year's 3-year-old champion was one of 10 entrants in the Grade 2, $400,000 dirt race contested over 1 1/8 miles. His presence has sent several potential rivals running for the exits.
Idratherbeblessed, at 86-1 the longest shot in a 12-horse field, glided his way to the front under Ben Curtis, set easy fractions and held off a rail-rallying bid from Gigante to stun the Grade 2, $300,000 Mervin Muniz Stakes by a neck at Fair Grounds on Saturday.
Saturday, Spirit of St Louis will look to build on his win in the Pegasus World Cup Turf when he meets stablemate Redistricting and 10 others in the Grade 2, $300,000 Mervin Muniz Classic at Fair Grounds. The Muniz, at 1 1/8 miles, is a race trainer Chad Brown has won three times, two of those winners having run previously in the Pegasus.

Good Cheer continued her dominating ways in the 3-year-old filly division, remaining unbeaten from six starts and established herself as likely no worse than second choice for the May 2 Kentucky Oaks with a 3 1/2-length victory in Saturday’s Grade 2, $400,000 Fair Grounds Oaks.
Good Cheer has won all five of her starts and if they ran the Kentucky Oaks tomorrow she'd probably be favored over the Bob Baffert-trained Tenma – and there's nothing close to Tenma entered against her Saturday in the Grade 2, $400,000 Fair Grounds Oaks.
Tiztastic, who won a pair of Kentucky Downs turf races in the space of 10 days last summer, picked an excellent time to win his first dirt contest, closing strongly into a fast pace to capture the Grade 2, $1 million Louisiana Derby by 2 1/4 lengths early Saturday evening at Fair Grounds.
This is the time. The time when 3-year-old promise must alchemize into production to make the Kentucky Derby with a legitimate chance. So it goes for the 10 horses entered in the Louisiana Derby on Saturday at Fair Grounds, and promise more than production defines this group.
