With its roots planted in a Texas backyard in 2009, FanDuel has since grown into an online betting powerhouse, achieving global prominence in fantasy sports, horse betting, online casino, and especially sports betting, where it's one of the two top U.S. operators.

In 2009, five people gathered in a backyard in Austin, Texas, during SXSW and came up with the concept that would soon become FanDuel. After starting out as a daily fantasy sports (DFS) platform, FanDuel has since grown into a mobile betting powerhouse, achieving global prominence in DFS, horse betting, online casino, and especially sports betting.
Just as the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for the expansion of sports betting outside of the state of Nevada in 2018, FanDuel merged with the leading European gambling outfit Paddy Power Betfair (now Flutter Entertainment). Pairing decades of experience handling wagers abroad with American sensibilities drawn from its DFS journey, FanDuel quickly established itself as one of the top two sports betting operators in the U.S. -- along with DraftKings, another company with DFS roots -- and has come nowhere close to relinquishing its lofty stature.
FanDuel Sportsbook offers mobile sports betting in Washington, D.C., and the following 22 states: Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana (except in parishes where betting is banned), Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
In addition, FanDuel operates retail -- but not mobile -- sportsbooks in Mississippi, Nevada, and Washington State, and is expected to be among several operators that will soon offer wagering in Missouri, which voted to legalize sports betting in 2024.
A bettor must be physically present within the boundaries of the aforementioned legal U.S. jurisdictions in order to place a wager at FanDuel Sportsbook, although residency isn't required. Like all major sportsbooks, FanDuel uses state-of-the-art geolocation technology to ensure that all wagers originate from a place where it's legal to bet on sports.
FanDuel enforces a minimum age of 21 for all sports bettors except in Washington, D.C., where 18 is the age minimum set forth by a local requirement.
Additionally, FanDuel maintains a robust self-exclusion program that applies on a platform-wide basis, meaning that any individual who self-excludes in one state will be barred from wagering on FanDuel in any of its operating states and on any product that FanDuel offers, including sportsbook, casino, horse betting, and DFS.
Once you deposit $10 or more at FanDuel Sportsbook, you can place a wager of $5 or more to qualify for $200 in bonus bets, which expire after seven days. But there's an important catch: You only get the bonus bets if that initial wager wins, which runs counter to what a lot of rival sportsbooks offer in the signup space.
This serves as a timely reminder to always read through a sportsbook's terms and conditions, whether it be for a specific promotion or wagering and payout rules at large. To that end, FanDuel's welcome offer requires just a 1x playthrough of the bonus bets, which is quite player-friendly and goes a long way toward offsetting the win requirement.
For NBA fans, FanDuel's welcome bonus is about as good as it gets, as anyone who signs up gets three free months of NBA League Pass in addition to the bonus bets.
To take advantage of any signup promos, bettors must first deposit funds into their mobile sportsbook accounts. At FanDuel Sportsbook, this can be done through online bank or wire transfers, debit or credit cards, cash at the counter of a brick-and-mortar FanDuel sportsbook, PayNearMe, a prepaid Play+ card, PayPal, or Venmo.
The same methods can generally be used to withdraw funds from a FanDuel Sportsbook account, which, in a convenient break from other sportsbooks, can be linked under one wallet to FanDuel online casino, horse betting, and DFS accounts.
Like most major sportsbooks, FanDuel offers a multitude of betting markets for the NBA, NCAA, NFL, NHL, MLB, UFC, WNBA, auto racing, boxing, golf, soccer, and tennis. But where FanDuel outstrips some of its rivals is in the amount of foreign and lower-league wagering markets it provides.
For instance, whereas some sportsbooks might only accept basketball wagers on the NBA, WNBA, NCAA, and Eurobasket, FanDuel offers action on the Big 3, Canadian Elite League, New Zealand's NBL, and the Philippine Basketball Association. The same international flavor can be found in FanDuel Sportsbook's markets for baseball and soccer, among other sports.
FanDuel also offers betting markets for such niche sports as cricket, cycling, darts, rugby, snooker, and volleyball.
Some states have placed certain restrictions on college sports wagering, the most common of which are the disallowance of betting on events involving in-state schools and placing prop bets on individual players.
If you simply want to be on your favorite team to win, you can place what's called a moneyline bet at FanDuel Sportsbook. Your potential payout depends on odds (+140, -140, etc.) that dictate which team is likelier to prevail.
You can also bet on teams to beat or cover the spread. Let's say the Memphis Grizzlies are favored by 2.5 points (-2.5) to beat the New Orleans Pelicans on the road. If you bet on Memphis to cover, they need to win by three points or more. If you bet on the Pelicans to beat the spread, they'll need to come within a 3-pointer of the Grizzlies to do so.
Think the Crescent City showdown will be a low-scoring affair? Then you might want to be the "under" in what's called a "totals" bet. More commonly known as an "over/under" wager, this involves betting on whether you think the combined score of both teams in any sport will be more or less than a total that Fanatics Sportsbook sets. So if the line in the Grizzlies-Pelicans game is 205.5 points, a bet on the teams to score 205 or fewer points would cash, while the same would be true for an "over" bet of 206 or more points.
Prop bets involve focusing on a specific statistical category involving a player or team. Do you think Dodgers star Mookie Betts will get more than one hit against the Braves? That's one prop bet you can make (the line in this instance would likely be set at 1.5 hits so as to avoid any pushes), while another example is which player will score the first basket in a WNBA tilt between the Liberty and Aces.
At the opposite end of the sweat spectrum are live bets, also known as "in-game" or "in-play" wagers. Here, bettors might wager on odds that fluctuate based on how the game is playing out. If you would rather just bet on on the outcome of the next drive in football or the next at-bat in baseball, that's commonly referred to as microbetting, which is a fast-paced subset of live betting.
Parlay wagers involve multiple bets, or legs, all of which must hit in order to yield a profit. Let's say it's Saturday in New York and you whip up a three-leg parlay wherein the Knicks, Rangers, and Giants all must win a weekend game for your bet to cash. The odds of this happening are nowhere near as good as just betting on one of these teams to win, but because of that, the potential payout is far more lucrative.
If you hit the first two of those legs and are less than confident that the Giants will deliver in the clutch, FanDuel Sportsbook may regale you with a cash-out offer that's worth more than your initial wager. It's your call as to whether to take the money and run or sweat things out.
FanDuel Sportsbook basically introduced America to the concept of same-game parlays (also known as single-game parlays, or SGPs), and American sports bettors have responded with a passion that borders on marital bliss. With SGPs, the same basic parlay principles apply, only all of the legs are restricted to a single sporting event -- like if you bet the over on a bundled trio of Devin Booker props in a Phoenix Suns showdown with the Sacramento Kings.
Ever the innovator, FanDuel Sportsbook has since introduced a feature called SGP+, which allows sports bettors to link an initial SGP with SGP+-eligible bets from different games. (SGP+-eligible bets will have an SGP icon next to them.)
Once a bettor has an SGP logged on their online betslip, each leg is updated as the game progresses, giving bettors a real-time snapshot of how they're doing. FanDuel Sportsbook's live betting odds are also updated at among the more punctual paces in the sports betting universe, while the FanDuel Sportsbook app is among the highest-rated of all apps, sportsbook or otherwise.
Here, the FanDuel Sportsbook app is regarded as both fast and comprehensive, displaying a ton of wagering options on a single screen. Not having to scroll or click to view a menu of bets is something that seasoned sports bettors hold near and dear, and the FanDuel Sportsbook experience delivers in just about every way imaginable.
Unlike just about every other sportsbook, FanDuel also has its own cable TV network: FanDuel TV. FanDuel operates its eponymous online horse betting platform alongside that of another of its racebook properties, TVG. On the television side of things, TVG was rebranded as FanDuel TV in 2022.
FanDuel might be an online native, but that doesn't mean it hasn't managed to cater to the needs of sports bettors who prefer to place their wagers in person and perhaps nurse a few drinks in a plush chair while watching games on humongous TVs.
FanDuel offers retail -- but not online -- sports betting -- at its sportsbooks in Mississippi at Biloxi's Imperial Palace and Tunica's Sam's Town Hotel and Gambling Hall, in Nevada at downtown Las Vegas' Fremont Hotel & Casino, and in Washington State at Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort near Poulsbo.
Among states that also offer mobile sports betting, FanDuel operates brick-and-mortar sportsbooks at such venues as Phoenix's Footprint Center, home to the NBA's Suns; the Delta Downs and Evangeline Downs racetracks in Louisiana; Michigan's MotorCity Casino; Cincinnati's Belterra Park racetrack; Connecticut's Mohegan Sun Casino; New York's Tioga Downs Racetrack; and New Jersey's Meadowlands Racing & Entertainment, which bears the distinction of being the home of FanDuel's very first retail U.S. sportsbook.
The easiest way for mobile bettors to reach out to FanDuel Sportsbook for customer support is through its chat function, which is accessible by clicking "help" on the app or "support" on the desktop version (support.fanduel.com).
Other alternatives are to reach out via email at support@fanduel.com, X/Twitter @FanDuel_Support, or voicemail -- yes, it still exists! -- at 609-224-1019.
While it can take a while to get in touch with a FanDuel representative or get your situation resolved, FanDuel Customer Support is typically friendly and helpful, and any lag in response time is still well within industry norms.
FanDuel believes that sports betting is a form of entertainment that is meant to be enjoyed on a budget, and the company offers bettors a number of tools to help them play responsibly. Included among these are deposit and wager limits within a given time period, maximum wager size, time limits (the amount of hours per day you permit yourself to spend on FanDuel's sportsbook and other legal platforms), and time-outs (a voluntary break from betting ranging from three to 365 days).
In late 2024, FanDuel launched a responsible gambling tool called My Spend that allows online gamblers to track all of wagering expenses and better manage their budgets. With My Spend, players can view a dashboard that features, among other personal betting statistics, the amount of money they've deposited with FanDuel and their net winnings over periods ranging from a week to three months. My Spend also urges users to utilize FanDuel's existing suite of responsible gambling tools, such as limits on the amount a bettor can deposit and wager.
Customers who self-exclude from FanDuel are offered access to Gamban, a service that will block all real-money gaming websites -- including legal and offshore sportsbooks, online casinos, poker sites, social gaming sites, and esports sites -- from use on up to 15 devices. FanDuel has also partnered with Kindbridge Behavioral Health Services to offer self-excluded players direct access to comprehensive mental health and group support services.
Furthermore, FanDuel has created multiple marketing campaigns around lived experience and responsible gambling and has partnered with Operation HOPE to help sports bettors and other gamblers become better-versed in financial literacy.
If you ever feel yourself losing control of your ability to control or limit the amount of time and/or money you spend gambling, call 1-800-GAMBLER or a state hotline for help.
