Irish Maxima, a 4-year-old filly, was never challenged in her first graded stakes victory at Aqueduct on Saturday, as she led all the way in a shortened field of five to win the Grade 3 Distaff Stakes by 1 1/4 lengths.
Jockey Kendrick Carmouche became the 69th jockey in North America to win 4,000 career races when he guided Crimson Light to victory in Saturday’s eighth race at Aqueduct, a win that set off an unusual celebration.
Ballerina d’Oro overcame her own erratic running to prevail by a nose over Early On in Saturday’s Grade 3, $200,000 Gazelle Stakes at Aqueduct and earned a spot in the starting gate for the $1.5 million Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on May 2.
There were two main factors that prompted trainer Chad Brown to ship Ballerina d'Oro to New York for Saturday's Grade 3, $200,000 Gazelle Stakes at Aqueduct rather than to Keeneland for Monday's rescheduled Grade 1, $750,000 Ashland. Brown prefers the 1 1/8-mile distance of the Gazelle to the 1 1/16 miles of the Ashland. Also, Ballerina d'Oro has a good race at Aqueduct, having finished second, beaten one length by Muhimma in last December's Grade 2 Demoiselle.
Crazy Mason, winless in six previous stakes tries, took advantage of a lightning-quick early pace and came with a sensational stretch run to overtake Quint’s Brew and win the Grade 2, $300,000 Carter Stakes by a neck.
Quint's Brew brings his razor-sharp Mid-Atlantic form to New York, where he starts as the likely favorite in Saturday's Grade 2, $300,000 Carter Stakes going seven furlongs at Aqueduct.
Trainer Todd Pletcher has entered two 5-year-olds in the $150,000 Excelsior Stakes at Aqueduct on Saturday. Crupi will be stepping down in class while Classic Catch takes a sharp step up, but the trainer believes that both are ideally suited to run 1 1/4 miles.
On a gloomy Saturday in New York, Rodriguez not only displayed his raw talent but, combined with proper pre-race behavior, he punched his ticket to the May 3 Kentucky Derby with a dominating 3 1/2-length, front-running victory in the Grade 2, $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct.
As impressive as Captain Cook has been winning his last two races, even trainer Rick Dutrow knows the horse has more to prove before being considered a legitimate Kentucky Derby contender. Heck, he has more to do just to qualify for the $5 million Derby on May 3 at Churchill Downs.
