Favored Zozos looked like the lone committed speed on paper for the Grade 3, $400,000 Ack Ack Stakes on Saturday at Churchill Downs, and that was exactly how it played out. This was the third stakes victory of the year, but first career graded stakes victory, for Zozos. The colt added the Ack Ack to the Knicks Go, at the same one-turn mile in May at Churchill Downs, and the Hanshin Cup, at a mile at Ellis around essentially a 1 1/2 turn configuration.  The Ack Ack was designated as a “Win and You’re In” event for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile in November at Santa Anita, but trainer Brad Cox did not commit to that target immediately postrace.  “He’s a true one-turn horse,” Cox said. “Unfortunately, the Breeders’ Cup’s two turns this year. We’ll see how he comes out of it and talk it over with the owners.” :: Get Belmont at the Big A Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. Available every race day. Zozos and jockey Florent Geroux were away in good order in the Ack Ack, and had emerged with the lead out of Churchill’s mile dirt chute through an opening quarter in 23.69 seconds, a relatively moderate split for the colt’s quality. Caddo River, on the outside, attempted to pester the favorite in the early going, but Zozos was still going easily with that one on his flank through a half in 47.10. Once straightened away into the stretch, Geroux shook Zozos up, and the colt responded with more power. Stage Raider, last-out winner of the R.A. “Cowboy” Jones at Ellis, tipped out for running room and gave a good effort, but Zozos had more than enough to hold him at bay.  The time for the mile was 1:35.32.  After the top two, it was another length back to a pace-compromised Three Technique, who rallied for third. O Besos, Caddo River, Seize the Night, and Skyros completed the order of finish.  Runner-up Stage Raider is trained by Cherie DeVaux, who did record a stakes win earlier on the card when More Than Looks rallied to a 2 3/4-length win in the $200,000 Jefferson Cup for 3-year-olds on the turf.  More Than Looks ($5.26), seventh after six furlongs, swung six wide in the stretch under Cristian Torres and had a devastating kick in the lane to win going away. He finished the mile on firm turf in 1:36.55.  Smokey Mandate, who stalked the pace and led in the stretch before being overhauled, was second by 3 1/2 lengths over Worthington.  More Than Looks had a strong spring and summer in New York, winning the Grade 3 Manila at Belmont and more recently finishing third in the Grade 2 National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame at Saratoga.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
