A stakes winner from New York, an up-and-coming runner from Southern California, and a multiple Grade 3 winner from Western Canada will come together in New Mexico on Tuesday for the $300,000 Zia Park Derby. The 1 1/16-mile race is one of seven open-company stakes worth a total of $1.1 million on the annual Land of Enchantment Day. The card includes the $300,000 Zia Park Oaks. Generous Tipper won the Discovery at the Belmont meet at Aqueduct in his last start Nov. 3. Earlier in his career, he was third in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland. He’s shipped in from his winter base of Oaklawn Park. “You know, this is a really nice horse,” said trainer Kenny McPeek, who won this year’s Kentucky Derby with Mystik Dan. “I think the horse would have been on the Triple Crown trail with a little luck last year. He had a little issue, had tweaked a hock, and unfortunately missed a lot of time because of it. “But he’s come back like a beast and this was the last straight 3-year-old option that we could find and I thought you know, ‘We’re not that far away, having horses at Oaklawn, and so we’re going to ship out there.’ ” :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Generous Tipper sat in fourth in the Discovery and went on to a three-quarter-length win, earning a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 99. “He’s jumped right back into the game at a high level and it’s kind of what we expected out of him,” said McPeek. Brian Hernandez Jr. has the mount from post 9 in the field of 10. Indispensable starts from post 5. He was a maiden winner in July and proceeded to run in back-to-back stakes, finishing second to Grade 1 winner Muth in the Shared Belief on Sept. 1 at Del Mar and third in the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby in his most recent out Sept. 29 at Remington Park. Since his last start, Indispensable has turned in a strong series of five-furlong works at Santa Anita. “It took him a little while to break his maiden and then he really started to come on this summer,” said trainer John Sadler. “He broke his maiden with a good rating, came back and ran very well in the Shared Belief. Really a good, strong race. “And then we thought going to Oklahoma he would be very tough. We weren’t happy with the trip he got and so we’re giving him another chance in one of these straight 3-year-old races.” Indispensable dueled on the lead in the Oklahoma Derby and finished third, beaten a length with a Beyer of 98 by Most Wanted. :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  “We didn’t like the trip he got in Oklahoma because he’s not a horse to be up in the front,” Sadler said. “He’s supposed to come off the pace. So, he ran good there, but we think with a better trip it will fit him better.” Flavien Prat will be aboard Indispensable for the first time, from post 5. August Rain is seeking his third straight derby win after taking the Grade 3 Canadian Derby and Grade 3 British Columbia Derby. He is backing up from three turns Tuesday. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
