Champion Zenyatta's weanling filly by popular young commercial sire War Front was euthanized on Oct. 28 following a paddock accident. The filly, who was born April 20, resided at Lane's End Farm near Versailles, Ky., where Zenyatta has been boarded since her retirement in late 2010 for owners Jerry and Ann Moss. "She was humanely euthanized last night at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital after a paddock accident on the farm," Lane's End general manager Mike Cline wrote in a statement issued on the official Zenyatta website. "As caretakers of these Thoroughbreds, we collectively mourn the loss of this beautiful filly.” Zenyatta is also the dam of Cozmic One, a 2-year-old colt by Bernardini, currently in training with John Shirreffs in New York; and Ziconic, a yearling Tapit colt, who has begun his early training at Mayberry Farm near Ocala, Fla. The mare was not bred for a 2015 foal. Zenyatta, the 2010 Horse of the Year and champion older female in three consecutive years, won 19 of her 20 career starts with 13 Grade 1 victories, including the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic and the 2008 Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic. She finished second by a head to Blame in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic in her career finale. She retired with earnings of $7,304,580, making her the all-time leader among North American females.
