ARCADIA, Calif. - California trainer Tim Yakteen may have runners in Kentucky Derby prep races in four time zones in coming weeks. Yakteen said on Sunday that he plans to start Fort Bragg in the Grade 3 Sunland Derby at Sunland Park in New Mexico on March 26, Reincarnate in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on April 1, National Treasure in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland at April 8, and Practical Move in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 8. All of the races are run at 1 1/8 miles and could lead to starts in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 6. “We’re trying to pick the best spot for each horse,” Yakteen said. Practical Move won the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita on March 4 in his 3-year-old debut. In December, Practical Move won his final start of 2022 in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity. :: Get Santa Anita Clocker Reports straight from the morning workouts at the track. Fort Bragg, National Treasure and Reincarnate joined Yakteen’s stable in late February from trainer Bob Baffert to remain eligible for potential starts in the Kentucky Derby. They were required to be transferred by Feb. 28 to earn qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby in major stakes in March and April. Baffert is ineligible to run horses in the Kentucky Derby this year following a suspension issued by Churchill Downs management in 2021. The two-year suspension, which ends this year, was put in place after the Baffert-trained Medina Spirit had a medication violation following a first-place finish in the 2021 Kentucky Derby. Practical Move worked a half-mile in 47.60 seconds on Saturday, his first work since the San Felipe. Yakteen described Practical Move’s workout as “fantastic.” Also on Saturday, Reincarnate, a troubled third in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 25, worked six furlongs in 1:12.40, while Fort Bragg, fifth of nine in the San Felipe, worked a half-mile in 48 seconds. National Treasure was scratched from the San Felipe Stakes because of a tender foot. Third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Keeneland last November, National Treasure has not raced since he finished third in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 8. National Treasure has worked twice in the last week – six furlongs in 1:11.80 on March 14 and five furlongs in a minute on Sunday. Yakteen emphasized that the race plans are tentative. “It’s still fluid,” he said. “If something happens here in the Santa Anita Derby, and we have a change, I can still see National Treasure here and make that move.” The Santa Anita Derby field has a probable field of seven. Aside from Practical Move, candidates include Geaux Rocket Ride, I Don’t Get it, Mandarin Hero, One in Vermillion, Skinner and possibly the maiden Dazzlemsilver. Baffert has not ruled out having a runner in the Santa Anita Derby who could start in leading 3-year-old races after the Kentucky Derby, but did not mention any specific candidates on Sunday. The Baffert-trained Cave Rock, second as the 1-2 favorite in the BC Juvenile, is nearing his 3-year-old debut. On Sunday at Santa Anita, Cave Rock worked seven furlongs in 1:25.20, his fifth workout of 2023. Hard to Figure, second to sidelined stablemate Newgate in the Grade 3 Robert Lewis Stakes on Feb. 4, has remained with Baffert in the last month. Hard to Figure worked seven furlongs in 1:24.60 on Sunday. Skinner, trained by John Shirreffs, worked five furlongs in 1:01.60 on Sunday. Shirreffs said he moved the work forward by 24 hours to avoid potential disruption caused by rain. A significant rain storm is expected in Southern California early in the week. “I thought he looked excellent,” Shirreffs said. “I thought he looked good when he galloped out. We moved his work up a day. The weather has been unsettled and you don’t want to take a chance that the track will be closed.” For Yakteen, the 3-year-old division is not entirely focused on Kentucky Derby candidates. Johannes, the winner of the Baffle Stakes on the hillside turf course on March 5 in his 3-year-old debut, is a candidate for the $100,000 Pasadena Stakes for 3-year-olds at a mile on turf on April 2. Johannes worked five furlongs in 59.60 seconds on Sunday. Kangaroo Court, the winner of an allowance race in his 3-year-old debut on March 4, is scheduled to start in the $150,000 Echo Eddie Stakes for statebreds at 6 1/2 furlongs on April 8. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
