Everyone wanted a piece of the action in the early stages of the Mohawk Million on Saturday night at Woodbine Mohawk Park, but ultimately it was the 4-5 favorite Venerable that found a clear path to the front and became the first filly to capture the juvenile trotting event, scoring in 1:54 2/5 for driver David Miller. The daughter of Walner remained unbeaten in eight career starts and pushed her single-season earnings above seven figures. Venerable started from post nine, and Miller didn't blast out of the gate, but almost every horse surrounding him did. The Mighty Hill and Duly Resolved to his inside were quick away as the wings opened the field for the mile contest, and they out-sprinted Valentina Blu, who had left to the inside for position. Miller settled on the outside and looked willing to follow horses momentarily, but he squeezed Venerable between horses entering the first turn, and that kept Selfie Queen and driver Dexter Dunn in the third lane as horses from posts eight, nine, and ten were three-across the track to a blistering 27 1/5 opening quarter. Late on the opening bend, Dunn lost Selfie Queen to a miscue, and also losing momentum and a major chance was second choice King Of The North, who got in tight quarters into the first turn when Star Power Hanover broke. King Of The North lost his action and multiple lengths due to the miscue. Paul MacDonell had Duly Resolved on the front, and he made sure that Venerable had to work some before ceding the front well before the opening half marker was reached. Venerable clicked by the half in 56 3/5, and Miller was quick to slow the field even more as longshot Southwind Domino struggled to keep up on the outside. A 29 3/5 third quarter got the field more tightly-packed, with Dover In Motion picking up second-over cover, followed by a recovered Star Power Hanover and King Of The North in an awful fourth-over slot. Miller turned Venerable loose into the homestretch, and the Richard "Nifty" Norman-trained filly took off as expected, leaving eight rivals at a distance, but not able to break free from the pocket-sitting Duly Resolved and MacDonell. ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter Venerable, one of four fillies in the race got put to the test late in the stretch as Duly Resolved, a gelding from the first crop of Resolve, started to close the gap as the pair approached the wire. In the end, the finish wire approached just in time for Venerable to get the biggest victory of her career with the benefit of a 28 1/5 final quarter. Duly Resolved's second-place finish gave him nine first or second finishes in nine career starts for trainer John Bax. Andrew McCarthy found room between horses in the late stages and got Valentina Blu through in time to nail the show spot, while The Mighty Hill and James MacDonald came through along the pylons for fourth. King Of The North again showed a strong stretch rally for Mark MacDonald but had too much ground to make up and settled for a fifth-place check. Selfie Queen, the fastest of the 10 Mohawk Million participants, had recovered from the brutal first quarter and break in stride to be closing along the pylons through the stretch but broke again late in the mile. Venerable is owned by David McDuffee, Melvin Hartman, Paul Bordogna and Steven Arnold who paid $210,000 at last year's Lexington Selected sale for the filly. "It's a tremendous feeling," said Miller following the victory. "She's got plenty of heart and guts to get to the wire." "She's been great from the get-go," said David McDuffee. "Going against the boys is icing on the cake."
