Donna Soprano and driver Bob McClure had an adventurous journey in the early stages, but in the end, the daughter of Donato Hanover was simply breathtaking, capturing the C$335,000 Peaceful Way Stakes final for 2-year-old filly trotters by open lengths in a career-best 1:53 3/5 clocking at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday night. McClure asked for post seven, despite winning one of two eliminations for the race a week earlier, to the surprise of many, but considering the early speed in this contest, his decision proved quite wise. Leaving to his outside was Dream Chapter and driver Yannick Gingras, and they overpowered the field right to the front before the turn. Dicentra, a stablemate of Donna Soprano, was parked past the quarter before gaining the front, but needed a 27 1/5 fraction to clear. Donna Soprano managed to line up behind cover going to the quarter, following longshot Amazone Duharas, but McClure recognized pretty quickly that cover would do him no favors and sent Donna Soprano three-wide before the half, clearing to control from Dicentra just past the 56 4/5 half-mile point. From then on, it was essentially Donna Soprano on cruise control as she kept the outer flow in check through three-quarters in 1:25 2/5 and then left the field in the dust, trotting well within herself to a 28 1/5 final quarter. Lady Chaos, who managed to get backed up to last along the pylons by headstretch despite post one, took the short route along the inside and closed with good energy to nail the place spot, a distance from the winner. You Will Be Queen gained well from third-over to get the third spot in a photo over Imextraspecial. Owned by Determination and trained by Luc Blais, Donna Soprano was a winner for the fifth time in as many career starts and returned $2.70 as the prohibitive public choice. "She's so fast," said McClure after the race, with a smile across his face. "She's got a great gait.  She's very special." As for her manners, a concern behind the gate for McClure heading into the Peaceful Way, he said, "She was perfect tonight."
