ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Following a spate of injuries on the synthetic Tapeta surface, Woodbine has hired longtime track superintendent Juan Meza as a racing surfaces consultant. Meza served as the track super at Golden Gate Fields for more than two decades until the Northern California track ceased operations last June. Golden Gate also had a Tapeta surface. Meza brings an extensive knowledge of Tapeta to Woodbine and has worked closely alongside surface manufacturer Tapeta Footings. He will work in coordination with Ryan Stafford, Woodbine’s director of racing surfaces. “The safety and well-being of both our equine athletes and human participants is our top priority,” said Bill Ford, Woodbine’s executive vice president of racing. “We are pleased to have Mr. Meza available to assist in our ongoing efforts and commitment to maintain the highest safety standards. We will continue to work closely with the HBPA and AGCO to ensure the safest possible conditions for all involved.” Woodbine canceled the last two races on Nov. 9 and the entire Nov. 10 card to examine the track following three fatal breakdowns on Nov. 9. There was one fatality during the 42 races that were contested from Nov. 14-17. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
