Already a legend, Winx achieved a unique milestone in racing history on Saturday with a record fourth consecutive win in the Group 1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia, her 29th straight win. The win was expected – Winx was 1-5 – and she performed to the height of her ability, prevailing by two lengths over Benbatl, a Group 1 winner in Dubai, Germany, and Australia this year. The $3.53 million Cox Plate is run at 1 1/2 miles on turf and is Australia’s top weight-for-age race. Ridden with supreme confidence by Hugh Bowman, Winx closed from fifth with a four-wide move to take the lead turning into the stretch. Bowman did not urge his mount in the final yards after Winx pulled clear of Benbatl. “The electricity that came through my body turning into the straight was something I guess I only get to feel,” Bowman said. “Everyone watching gets so much joy and pleasure out of the superb ability of this wonderful horse. The fact that she’s been able to do it so many times consecutively speaks volumes of the management of her. “We’re all so lucky to come across such an amazing athlete in Winx.” Humidor finished third, 2 3/4 lengths behind Benbatl, in the field of eight. Saeed Bin Suroor, the trainer of Benbatl, paid credit to the winner. “It was a great race,” Suroor said. “We took our chance. We got beat by a better filly. She’s something special.” Winx surpassed Kingston Town (1980-82) as the only horse to win four runnings of the Cox Plate. Winx, by Street Cry, has been honored as Australia’s Horse of the Year for the last three seasons and is well on her way to a fourth title. A 7-year-old mare, Winx began her winning streak in May 2015 and has won a world-record-equaling 22 Group 1 races. The Irish hurdler Hurricane Fly won 22 Grade 1 races in England and France from 2008-15. Owned by a partnership, Winx has won four Group 1 races since she returned to racing after a break during the Australian winter. She may not start again until early 2019, during the autumn portion of the Australian season.
