HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Windy Walk got away with a soft pace and made the most of the opportunity, holding off Grade 1 winners Power Squeeze and Soul of an Angel to upset Thursday’s $140,000 Rampart Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Windy Walk brought a three-race win streak into the one-mile Rampart, those victories coming by a combined margin of less than a length, two at Churchill Downs and the third at Keeneland. The Rampart was just her second start against stakes competition, the 3-year-old daughter of Munnings having finished a distant sixth in the one-mile Wilton last summer at Saratoga. With Tyler Gaffalione aboard, Windy Walk posted a pedestrian 25.82 second opening quarter-mile split, while prompted by Charlie’s Wish from the outset. Windy Walk fended off bids from both that rival and Power Squeeze on the final turn and into the stretch, then held off the two favorites under vigorous handling to win by a neck at the end. :: Get Gulfstream Park Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. Soul of an Angel, making her first start since upsetting the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint nearly nine weeks earlier, dropped a half-dozen lengths off the slow pace, lost considerable ground angling very wide while commencing her rally into the stretch. She was gained gradually down the middle of the strip under steady pressure from jockey Drayden Van Dyke but fell short at the end. Windy Walk, a homebred owned by J. Richard Perkins, completed the distance in 1:38.01 over the fast track and paid $30.20. “The six [Dazzling Move] looked like she had a little bit of speed but when she stumbled, I just gave my filly her head and we were able to get away with nice easy fractions,” Gaffalione said. “I was fairly confident around the turn. She was throwing her ears back and forth and I felt like I had a little bit left. She gave me everything she had. I’m so proud of her.”   Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said he felt the combination of the time off since the Breeders’ Cup and lack of speed in the field made Soul of an Angel, among the leading contenders for championship honors in the filly and mare sprint division, susceptible to just such an outcome in her 2024 finale. “I knew we had her vulnerable and she got beat fair and square,” said Joseph. “He [Van Dyke] said they went slow on him. We didn’t do a ton with her [since the Breeders’ Cup]. We thought we could get through it and we didn’t. If anything, it’s my fault she got beat.” :: Play Gulfstream Park with confidence! It was another half-length farther back to Marksman Queen who finished third after leading into the stretch. La Mehana, Group 1-placed in his native France before shipping to the U.S. and joining trainer Christophe Clement’s barn here last winter, won the Grade 3 Waya Stakes two starts back at Aqueduct before finishing a disappointing seventh in the Grade 3 Long Island over the same course five weeks later. He was ridden for the first time in the 1 3/8-mile Via Borghese by Dylan Davis, who is scheduled to move his tack locally on a regular basis after New Year’s. La Mehana raced forwardly placed from the outset, engaged Marksman Queen leaving the final turn, stuck her head in front near midstretch, then dug in bravely under a strong hand ride to narrowly last. Forever After All, who finished second in each of her last two starts, both against Grade 3 opposition, rated near the rear of the compact lineup for over a mile, swung out to commence her bid on the final turn, finished willingly when set down but fell just short with her bid. La Mehana paid $6.60 after completing the distance over a firm course in 2:14.42.
