Welder won the 16th stakes race of his career Friday night in his first start on grass as he rallied for a neck win over pacesetter Shannon C in the $70,000 Remington Park Turf Sprint. It was a half-length back to No Lak of Speed in third. The race was one of three Oklahoma-bred stakes on the card. They were designed to produce starters for the $1 million Oklahoma Classics Night program Oct. 16. Welder ($3.20) raced in third early behind an opening quarter in 21.08 seconds. Vance on Sunday at Remington, but his connections opted to run in the Oklahoma-bred race Friday. It was meant to serve as his springboard to the $130,000 Oklahoma Classics Sprint. The stakes action Friday started with the $70,000 Red Earth. Quality Rocket, who was just edged in the race a year ago when second, improved his position and was a 4 1/4-length winner. Sedaris finished second, while it was a head back to Hallelujah Hit in third. Quality Rocket ($4.80) stalked the pace in second as Pacific Typhoon set fractions of 23.69 seconds for the opening quarter and 46.72 for the half-mile. Quality Rocket moved to the lead in the stretch and covered 7 1/2 furlongs on firm ground in 1:28.64. Garrett Steinberg was aboard for Gerald Ball and trainer Boyd Caster. Quality Rocket is a son of Backstabber. The $70,000 Bob Barry Memorial for fillies and mares at 7 1/2 furlongs on the grass was a reversal of last year’s results, with Hawaiian Typhoon a length winner over Alternative Slew. Last year. Hawaiian Typhoon ($5.60) on Friday set fractions of 23,88 seconds for the opening quarter, 46.81 for the half-mile and 1:10.15 for six furlongs before winning in 1:28.50.
