WILMINGTON, Del. - Father Time hasn’t caught up to War Like Goddess just yet as the popular 7-year-old mare rallied down the center of the Delaware turf course to win Sunday’s Grade 3, $250,000 Robert G. Dick Memorial Stakes at 1 3/8 miles. As Alpha Bella and Chop Chop doled out fractions of 26.41, 52.38 and 1:17.40 over the firm ground, War Like Goddess relaxed in midpack under jockey Junior Alvarado. At the three-eighths pole, Alvarado asked his mount to run and War Like Goddess swept around the leaders. Alvarado dropped his whip in upper stretch and War Like Goddess seemed to hesitate. She regrouped, however, and went on to score by a length over Chop Chop in 2:16.60. Vergara was another three-quarters back in third. Atomic Blonde was fourth. La Mehana and Alpha Bella dead-heated for last. Lullaby Land, Pretty Provocative and Freydis the Red scratched. :: Bet with the Best! At first, winning trainer Bill Mott wondered if War Like Goddess idled once she moved into strong contention at the three-sixteenths pole. As the Hall of Famer observed the replay on the infield big screen, he seemed a bit more bullish about the effort. “I guess they went fairly slow, right,” Mott said as he gave a running commentary of the race. “You say, OK, she idled off of that, but they’re not going to close into that as if they went in 49 and 1:13. The horse that was second is on the lead right now.” As War Like Goddess commenced her rally, Mott continued his train of thought. “And here, she just doesn’t loop them, you know what I mean? She’s got a little bit of work to do there. There she goes. I think she ran to [Chop Chop] and that one still had a little run in the tank.” Mott mentioned the Grade 2, $500,000 Flower Bowl at Saratoga as a potential next race for War Like Goddess with the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf the long-term goal. A true staying mare, War Like Goddess was forced to run against males in the Breeders’ Cup Turf the past two years as the 1 1/2-mile distance was preferable to the Filly and Mare distance of 1 3/16 miles at Keeneland in 2022, and the 1 1/4-mile trip at Santa Anita in 2023. This year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf will be contested at 1 3/8 miles at Del Mar. Bred in Kentucky by Calumet Farm, War Like Goddess is campaigned by George Krikorian, and has won 12 of 20 starts for career earnings of $2,775,184. She has won three Grade 1 races, including the last two editions of the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic against males. *Battery Park Stakes Auto Glide rallied from last under jockey Julien Leparoux to win a thrilling three-horse photo over Shaft’s Bullet and Movisitor in the $175,000 Battery Park Stakes at 1 1/16 miles over fast dirt. Favored Movisitor blasted out to the lead, set uncontested fractions of 24.28, 48.47 and 1:12.67, and turned into the lane with a clear advantage, but he noticeably tired inside the three-sixteenths pole. Shaft’s Bullet bid outside of the pacesetter with an eighth remaining, but was nipped on the wire by Auto Glide, who completed the distance in 1:46.26 and returned $12.40 to win. Movisitor finished a neck back in third. They were followed home by Magic Michael, Irish Cork and Slip Mahoney. Drake’s Passage and Coastal Mission scratched. “At the break, he kind of slipped from behind a little bit,” winning rider Julien Leparoux said. “We were a little farther back than I wanted, but he traveled very nicely and after that we had a very smooth trip. He came with his run in the end, and we got there on time.” Bred in Kentucky by Calumet Farm, Auto Glide, a 4-year-old colt by Tiznow, was claimed by trainer Greg Compton out of a runner-up effort in a $30,000 “non-two” claiming event at Oaklawn on Jan. 27. For the ownership team of Compton, Mark Dean and Mike Cohea, Auto Glide has never been off the board from five starts and is currently on a four-race win streak. The Battery Park was his first stakes run. *Dashing Beauty “I’m in this game for the dream,” Darryl Abramowitz said after his Night Cap benefited from a beautiful ride to post a minor upset in the $125,000 Dashing Beauty for fillies and mares traveling six furlongs. “Today, the dream came true.” Jockey Flavien Prat had Night Cap far off the pace in last position as Goodgirl Badhabits set fractions of 23.37 and 46.94 seconds. Prat saved valuable ground on the turn, angled out for clearance in the stretch, then ran down the leaders to score by 4 3/4 lengths over Late Frost. Betting favorite Jersey Pearl was another neck behind in third. Goodgirl Badhabits tired to fourth and was followed home by Olivia Darling, Fee, Red Hot Mess and Beguine. Everyoneloveslinda scratched. Night Cap returned $18.40 to win as the fifth choice in the betting. Night Cap is one of 20 horses that Abramowitz has with trainer Horacio De Paz under the DEA Thoroughbred Racing name. The Dashing Beauty was Night Cap’s first start for the connections after being claimed for $40,000 out of a runner-up effort behind Goodgirl Badhabits at Pimlico on May 16. “I liked her,” Abramowitz said about why he claimed the 6-year-old daughter of J P’ s Gusto. “She won 11 of 22 times. She’s got a lot of guts, always tries. [Horacio] is an amazing trainer. He trains in all different circuits. He gets his horses ready and fresh.” Night Cap was bred in Florida by Lonnie Stokes. She’s now earned $346,115. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
