OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer Will Walden has had Big Blue Line in his barn for about nine months, and he’s still not sure what distance and surface is preferred by the 6-year-old gelding. In six starts since being claimed for $80,000 late last June, Big Blue Line has won on dirt and synthetic. In Walden’s estimation, he’s also run sneaky good in a couple of losses in turf stakes. “I’ve run the horse six or seven times and I’m about as clueless as to surface and distance as when I got him,” Walden said. Coming off a win going a mile over Turfway Park’s synthetic surface on Feb. 28, Big Blue Line returns to dirt Friday at Aqueduct in a multi-conditioned allowance going a mile that serves as the feature on an eight-race card. Big Blue Line is eligible for this race because the $27,533 he earned for winning his last start is below the “nonwinners of $45,000 since Oct. 4” threshold for this race. The last time Big Blue Line raced on dirt and on an anti-bleeding medication was last August, when he won in this condition going a mile at Saratoga. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Big Blue Line has two wins and a second in his last three starts when permitted to race on Lasix, which he will be able to use on Friday. “I’m not going to say it’s just Lasix only,” Walden said. “This race, he fit with the conditions the way it was written. He’s training really well. I think the pace scenario will set up where he can get tucked in behind horses, which he likes to do and come with that one run.” Jose Lezcano rides Big Blue Line from post 3. The speed of the race appears to be Nelson Avenue and Jamie Dreams. Nelson Avenue finished last in a condition similar to this going 1 1/8 miles on March 7, and he also finished last in the Toboggan here on Feb. 1. Jamie Dreams, trained by Louis Linder, has won his last two on the front end at Parx. The horse to beat in the race may be Star of Wonder, who went 3 for 4 last year and is making his 4-year-old debut for trainer Brad Cox. In his lone career defeat, Star of Wonder, a half-brother to the multiple Grade 1 winner Shedaresthedevil, had a difficult trip in a two-turn race at Keeneland, as he was rank early on. Cox took blinkers off Star of Wonder for a second-level allowance win at Churchill Downs last Nov. 24. Javier Castellano has the call on Friday. The 7-year-old gelding Repo Rocks is coming off a second-place finish to Book’em Danno in a three-horse overnight handicap at Colonial Downs on March 14. Castle Chaos, seventh behind Big Blue Line on Aug. 23 at Saratoga, has raced just once since, finishing fifth in the Toboggan Stakes at Aqueduct on Feb. 1. Power Seeker, trained by Linda Rice, finished behind Big Blue Line last Aug. 23 and hasn’t run since. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
