OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Voodoo Song, who became the Sultan of Saratoga when he won four races in six weeks there last summer, makes his 4-year-old debut Wednesday in a second-level allowance scheduled for 1 1/16 miles over Aqueduct’s outer turf course. Voodoo Song, a son of English Channel trained by Linda Rice for Barry Schwartz, won a $40,000 claiming race on July 22 at Saratoga. Four days later, he won a first-level New York-bred allowance race and followed that with a another statebred allowance victory. He completed his “Saratoga Slam” with a victory in the Grade 3 Saranac on Sept. 2. Voodoo Song ended his 3-year-old season with losses at odds-on in the Grade 3 Commonwealth Derby at Laurel and the Hawthorne Derby in Chicago. Rice said the soft ground was Voodoo Song’s undoing in the Hawthorne Derby. “If I hadn’t shipped him all the way out there I might have been inclined to scratch him,” Rice said. This is a starting point for Voodoo Song, who Rice said is “not a great breeze horse in the morning.” “Hard to have too much confidence,” she said. On the other hand, Voodoo Song’s weapon is his speed, and he could get loose on the lead in this spot under Jose Lezcano. On paper, Cerise’s Prince looks like a speed horse. But, trainer Danny Gargan said he is removing the blinkers from that gelding wore for his seasonal debut and plans to experiment by taking him off the pace. “I’m going to try and get him to relax, sit second or third, and see if we can change our game plan a little to see if he can be a better horse,” Gargan said. “He’s not going to be a better horse chasing all the time.” Trainer Chad Brown has the uncoupled entry of Funtastic and Ticonderoga in this spot. Monster Bea, War Bond, and Atlantic Sun complete the field on turf. Preservationist and Uncle Sigh are entered only if the race is transferred to the main track.
