Vazquez had spent 10 years riding at Oaklawn until making the move to Southern California, where he won a Santa Anita title in the fall of 2022 and has captured five titles at Los Alamitos. Since being based on the West Coast, Vazquez also has racked up 14 graded stakes wins led by the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby with Practical Move and the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante with And Tell Me Nolies.  “I told Billy, 'I want to go home for a little bit,'” said Vazquez, who has a 4-year-old son and a house in Hot Springs. “We’ll be back in a little bit.”  Castle said Vazquez will be riding in Southern California through the close of the Del Mar meet Dec. 3. He said he’s booked to ride most all of the stakes closing weekend, including the Grade 1 Matriarch aboard Elm Drive.  Castle said Vazquez was not initially scheduled to winter at Oaklawn, where the first day of entries is Friday. But he said the meet’s large fields and significant purses were an additional draw outside of Vazquez’s family ties to Arkansas.  “That’s why pencils have erasers,” Castle said. “We are very proud for the 14, 15 months we’ve been on the West Coast – proud and grateful. We’re going to leave temporarily.”  Castle said the decision to winter at Oaklawn was made on Monday.  Vazquez, a native of Puerto Rico who has won more than 5,000 races, owns five riding titles at Remington Park in Oklahoma City. His major wins at Oaklawn including the Grade 2 Rebel in 2022. Vazquez also was the regular rider of the retired marathon stakes horse Lone Rock. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
