Uncle D won the $1 million Rainbow Futurity on Sunday at Ruidoso Downs for his first stakes win to move to the fore of the Quarter Horse juvenile division in advance of time trials for the All American Futurity next month. Uncle D won for the third time in his four-race career with a commanding win by 1 1/4 lengths in the Rainbow Futurity at 400 yards. Ridden by Cody Smith for trainer Clinton Crawford, Uncle D broke well from the inside post in a field of nine and had a half-length lead after the first 100 yards. The lead grew wider in the final 100 yards. Hotsempting, the 8-5 favorite, finished second, a head in front of DF Mischievious Jess. Uncle D was timed in 19.61 seconds and earned $420,000 for owner Don Cavenaugh. Hotsempting was seventh in the $1 million Ruidoso Futurity on June 9, a race won by the filly Fernweh, who was not entered in the time trials for the Rainbow Futurity earlier this month. Uncle D, bought for $170,000 at the Heritage Place Quarter Horse yearling sale in Oklahoma City last September, has earned $597,365. His only loss was a second in the $1,073,100 Heritage Place Futurity on June 1 at Remington Park. Time trials for the All American Futurity will be run Aug. 16-17. The final, with an estimated purse of $3 million, will be run Sept. 2.
