ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Angus Buntain notched his first stakes win with Unbridled Weather in Sunday’s $100,500 Frost King at Woodbine, under red-hot stakes rider Fraser Aebly. Unbridled Weather vied for the lead with My Boy Bruce in the 6 1/2-furlong sprint for Ontario-sired 2-year-olds, then held off a late surge from Awesome Rainbow to prevail by a neck, in a time of 1:16.58. Favored Kekoa edged out My Boy Bruce for third, while the slow-starting Dark Screen finished fifth in the nine-horse field. “He’s a very cool horse and he wants to get himself very forwardly placed,” Aebly said. “We broke well and I took a nice little hold of him. He relaxed and when we hit the head of the lane, he’s all racehorse. He digs in the whole way - he doesn’t give up. He was giving me all he had.” Unbridled Weather ($17) earned $60,000 for Pier 1 Stables. Buntain said he plans on pointing the son of Prime Attraction to the $250,000 Coronation Futurity over 1 1/8 miles for Canadian-breds here Nov. 30. He supplemented the gelding to the Frost King on short rest. “Bringing 2-year-olds back on two weeks’ rest is always questionable,” Buntain said. “He does recover very well from his races. He was kicking the barn down, so we thought, let’s supplement and go ahead.” *** Brengungirl ($3.10) remained unbeaten with an easy 4 1/2-length score in the $100,000 South Ocean Stakes for Ontario-sired 2-year-old fillies. Trained by Kevin Attard for Canuck Racing Club, Brengungirl covered the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.87 under Rafael Hernandez and banked $60,000 in her stakes debut. Attard said the daughter of stamina influence Point of Entry shouldn’t have a problem moving out to a route later this fall. “I think the way she’s progressing, it should transition pretty simple for her,” Attard said. “She does have a good mind. She trains really forwardly. In the morning, she’s always shown a little early foot. I’m happy that she’s learning to relax and settle. That should bode well for her when we stretch her out.” Ella It Is edged out I Love to Win for second. Onejabtoomany and Silent Strike completed the order of finish. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
