OZONE PARK, N.Y. – There is no stakes race Sunday at Aqueduct. But several horses entered in a multi-conditioned allowance race that serves as the feature on the nine-race program could show up in a black-type event – perhaps the $150,000 Queens County on Dec. 31 – at some point this winter. Unbridled Bomber runs like a stakes a horse – except in stakes. The last four times he’s run in allowance company, he’s won. That included a nine-length victory in a third-level allowance here in April going a one-turn mile, the same configuration as this race. Most recently, Unbridled Bomber gutted out a nose victory under similar conditions as this on Oct. 26, except the race was run at 1 1/8 miles. :: DRF's Black Friday Sale: Get 20% off (almost) everything in the DRF Shop. Code: BF2023 Trainer Jim Ryerson said Unbridled Bomber is a horse that needs Lasix, anti-bleeding medication that is prohibited for use in stakes but permitted in allowance races. That, more than anything, Ryerson believes explains Unbridled Bomber’s success in allowance races and failure in stakes. “He’s a big, strong, sound 4-[year-old]-turning-5 horse that’s a router,” Ryerson said Friday. “Pretty much, he needs Lasix to run to the best of his ability.” That’s probably why you won’t see Unbridled Bomber in a New York stakes. There are still some jurisdictions that allow Lasix in stakes, and Ryerson could look in those places should he opt to ship the horse. Ryerson explained that he didn’t have Unbridled Bomber 100 percent for his last race. He had given the horse a few weeks off after a last-place finish in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, not expecting a race for which Unbridled Bomber was eligible to be offered. Further, Unbridled Bomber also had equipment issues in the paddock prior to that race as the bit had to be adjusted after it was put on upside down. Javier Castellano will ride Unbridled Bomber for the first time Sunday. Sheriff Bianco, as his 1-for-13 record this year suggests, is not one who likes to win. His seven second-place finishes this year do demonstrate his willingness to compete. His company lines are stout, facing the likes of Cody’s Wish, Ny Traffic, and the in-form Straight Arrow, to whom Sheriff Bianco finished second in the Empire Classic for New York-breds on Oct. 29. Straight Arrow was entered in Friday’s Grade 2 Clark Stakes at Churchill Downs. “The mile suits him well, he ran well at a mile and an eighth last time,” said Linda Rice, who claimed Sheriff Bianco for $30,000 in the summer of 2022. “He just shows up. He’s been a great claim. We’ve enjoyed having him.” Daydreaming Boy was beaten a nose by Unbridled Bomber in the aforementioned Oct. 26 race. His two starts prior to that came in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby (eighth) and Grade 3 Smarty Jones (third). Swiftsure has shown improvement since trainer Horacio De Paz added blinkers to his equipment. He won two straight races before finishing fifth behind Everso Mischievous in the Grade 2 Forty Niner. Divine Armor, Adero, and Constitutionalawyer are all coming off wins. Bold Endeavor finished third behind Unbridled Bomber and Daydreaming Boy on Oct. 26. Bold Endeavor is the only one being offered for the $80,000 claiming price. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
