OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Prevalence, unbeaten and untested in two starts at Gulfstream Park, will make his two-turn and stakes debut in next Saturday’s Grade 2, $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, his connections confirmed on Friday. The Wood, at 1 1/8 miles, offers 170 qualifying points to the May 1 Kentucky Derby on a 100-40-20-10 basis so a top-two finish could earn Prevalence a spot in the Derby alongside Essential Quality, the 2-year-old champion of 2020 who is making his next start in Saturday’s Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. Both horses are owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Godolphin Racing. “The way we’re approaching it is the race will do the deciding not us hoping and thinking and hypothesizing,” said Jimmy Bell, president of Godolphin U.S. “Hopefully, the result will point you in one direction or another.” Prevalence, a son of Medaglia d’Oro trained by Brendan Walsh, won a seven-furlong maiden race by 8 1/2 lengths on Jan. 23 and a one-mile first-level allowance race by three lengths on March 11. :: KENTUCKY DERBY 2021: Derby Watch, point standings, prep schedule, news, and more “At least we were able to see progress and a good experience in both instances,” Bell said. “I think the question now becomes distance; if he’s able to carry that speed the two turns and obviously a step up in competition, and the Wood seems like a very good spot to see both of those come to fruition.” Tyler Gaffalione will be in to ride Prevalence. Also confirmed for the Wood was Candy Man Rocket, the winner of the Sam F. Davis on Feb. 6 and 11th-place finisher in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby on March 6. Trainer Bill Mott said Candy Man Rocket was originally being pointed to the Arkansas Derby on April 10 but felt this was a better spot to try and rebound from a poor performance. “I think he got off a little bad and I’m thinking - and this is merely a guess - he might have got bounced a little bit on the turn and I don’t know if he held his breath and panicked,” Mott said. “It’s just one of those things, no great explanation. The horse is fine.” On Friday, Grade 3 Gotham winner Weyburn worked six furlongs in 1:16.84 over the Belmont Park training track. The work was a little slower than trainer Jimmy Jerkens was hoping for, but the track was not yielding quick times throughout the morning. “He acts fine,” Jerkens said. “Maybe he didn’t like the slowness of the track, he just ambled along. His two works before the Gotham were just incredible. We’ll see how he does the next few days.” As of Friday, confirmed runners for the Wood, with rider assignments, included Brooklyn Strong (Manny Franco), Candy Man Rocket (Junior Alvarado), Crowded Trade (Eric Cancel), Dynamic One (Jose Ortiz), Nicky the Vest (Kendrick Carmouche), Prevalence (Tyler Gaffalione), Risk Taking (Irad Ortiz Jr.), and Weyburn, (Trevor McCarthy). Bourbonic is possible.
