ARCADIA, Calif. - Faiza continued her domination of the California 3-year-old filly division with the most comprehensive win of her career in Saturday’s Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks. Ridden by Flavien Prat, Faiza benefited from a perfect trip to pull away from seven rivals, winning by 7 1/2 lengths to stretch her undefeated record to five races. The margin of victory was the widest of Faiza’s brief career. In most years, a win in the Santa Anita Oaks would propel a filly into contention for the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs, but Faiza will not contest that race on May 5. :: Get Santa Anita Clocker Reports straight from the morning workouts at the track. Available every race day.  Faiza is trained by Bob Baffert, who has been suspended from running horses in the Kentucky Derby or Kentucky Oaks this year for a medication violation found in a post-race test taken from Medina Spirit after the 2021 Kentucky Derby. This is the second and final year of a two-year penalty issued by Churchill Downs management. The Kentucky Oaks will be without a filly in Faiza who has won four consecutive graded stakes. In the Santa Anita Oaks, Faiza ($3.60) closed from fourth in a field of eight to take the lead in early stretch, quickly pulling clear. Faiza ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.27 and earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 89. “I got her in a good position,” Prat said. “Bob said she was sitting on a good race. “The pace was fair. When I squeezed her, she responded.” Gila, the 91-1 longest shot in a field of eight, set a quick pace of 22.49 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 46.01 for a half-mile, leading by as many as six lengths. Gila rapidly faded from contention. Faiza and 5-2 Clearly Unhinged moved into contention on the turn, with Clearly Unhinged leading briefly before fading through the stretch. And Tell Me Nolies, the winner of two graded stakes in 2022, closed from sixth to finish second, a half-length in front of 5-1 Window Shopping. And Tell Me Nolies was second to Faiza in the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on March 5 in her first start of the year. Jockey Ramon Vazquez said And Tell Me Nolies benefited from the experience of closing from off the pace in the $401,500 Santa Anita Oaks with the hope she can show continued improvement in the Kentucky Oaks. “I rode my race,” Vazquez said. “I wanted to win, but I wanted to teach her to get dirt in her face." Vazquez said And Tell Me Nolies handled the kickback “very well.” Clearly Unhinged finished fourth, followed by Venganza, Don’t Get Pickled, Cliquish and Gila. Faiza, owned by Michael Petersen, has earned $642,000. By Girvin, Faiza was purchased for $725,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Mid-Atlantic 2-year-olds in-training sale last May. Her four stakes wins include the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Los Alamitos in December and the Grade 3 Las Virgenes Stakes at a mile at Santa Anita on Jan. 28. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
