Two-time champion Monomoy Girl has been retired after sustaining an injury Tuesday at Churchill Downs, ending what would have been another comeback in her storybook racing career. Trainer Brad Cox said Monomoy Girl “came back a little off in her right front” following a routine gallop and was subsequently diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture of the sesamoid that will not require surgery. “It’s very disappointing not to have her back one more go-round,” said Cox. “She’s been absolutely fabulous.” Monomoy Girl, a 6-year-old chestnut mare by Tapizar out of Drumette, by Henny Hughes, won 14 of 17 starts and $4,776,818. She was the champion 3-year-old filly of 2018 after winning the Kentucky Oaks and Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Churchill that year. After being sidelined by various ailments for more than 18 months, including her entire 4-year-old season, she repeated in the 2020 BC Distaff at Keeneland to cap a 4-for-4 season that earned her another Eclipse Award as top older filly-mare on dirt. :: View Monomoy Girl's career past performances Spendthrift Farm purchased Monomoy Girl for $9.5 million last fall at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Spendthrift kept her in training and partnered with MyRacehorse Stable to offer microshare ownership in her as a racing prospect. The Madaket Stables of Sol Kumin – who along with Michael Dubb, The Elkstone Group, and Monomoy Stables were her original owners – also bought into the partnership after the Fasig-Tipton sale. Ned Toffey of Spendthrift said in a press release issued late Wednesday that Monomoy Girl is expected to arrive at the Lexington farm this week to settle into her new career as a future broodmare. Breeding plans have not yet been determined. “Certainly, we are disappointed, especially for all of our partners,” said Toffey. “While we were hopeful to get her back to the races this year, we won’t lose focus on what is most important – and that is a healthy Monomoy Girl. She’s an all-time great and we look forward to the next chapter of her career and giving her a great life on the farm at Spendthrift.” Monomoy Girl ranks as the fifth highest-earning female on dirt in North American racing history, behind Midnight Bisou, Zenyatta, Beholder, and Royal Delta. Monomoy Girl had two races earlier this year, both at Oaklawn Park, winning the Bayakoa and finishing second by a nose in the Apple Blossom. Until this latest setback, Cox had been upbeat in recent weeks about her chances to make it back to the races.
