Kentucky Derby runner-up Two Phil's and Wood Memorial winner Lord Miles headline a field of eight 3-year-olds entered Monday for the Grade 3, $500,000 Ohio Derby, set for Saturday at Thistledown in North Randall. Two Phil’s, trained by Larry Rivelli, ran a gallant second in the Kentucky Derby, racing near a hot pace and assuming the lead at the head of the stretch before being overhauled by Mage. With regular jockey Jareth Loveberry named to ride, the colt drew post 4 in the field of eight for Saturday. The morning line was not released at the time of the Ohio Derby draw, but Two Phil’s, a multiple graded stakes winner, is likely to be favored based on his accomplishment. Lord Miles, who will have Edgard Zayas aboard as he breaks from post 7, comes in having not started since his $120.50 upset in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial on April 8. He was entered in the Kentucky Derby, but was scratched following the unexplained deaths of two horses also trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. early in the Churchill Downs meet. :: Get ready for summer racing with a DRF Formulator Quarterly PP plan Bishops Bay, beaten a head while second to subsequent Belmont Stakes winner Arcangelo in the Grade 3 Peter Pan on May 13 at Belmont Park, and Henry Q, a distant third in the Peter Pan, were entered in the Ohio Derby, as was Hayes Strike, who won the Texas Derby last time out. From the rail out, the field for the Ohio Derby is Henry Q (Kendrick Carmouche aboard); Timesatappin (Kevin Gonzalez); Bishops Bay (Florent Geroux); Two Phil's (Loveberry); Agnello's Dream (Erik Barbaran); Last Cookie (Leandro Briceno); Lord Miles (Zayas); and Hayes Strike (Cristian Torres). The Ohio Derby anchors a Saturday card at Thistledown that will also include the $250,000 Lady Jacqueline Stakes for open fillies and mares; the $75,000 Daniel Stearns Cleveland Gold Cup for Ohio-bred 3-year-olds; and the $75,000 George Lewis Memorial Stakes for Ohio-bred older horses. The remainder of the card was to be drawn later Monday. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
