LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Most of them already have cleared the two-other-than condition that partly governs the eighth race Tuesday at Churchill Downs, making for some interesting handicapping. Eight of the 12 older horses in the main body of an oversubscribed lineup are entered for an optional $80,000 claiming tag, and all eight have been tested in stakes company at one time or another. It’s enough to make for a wide-open feature as Kentucky Derby week gets started with a nine-race card that begins at 12:45 p.m. Eastern. Agent Peter Graves – should he decide to accept his mission – figures among a core of lukewarm favorites in the $134,000 second-level allowance scheduled for 5 1/2 furlongs on turf. Irad Ortiz Jr. will break from post 1 when aboard Agent Peter Graves, whose name recalls the late actor who starred on the old “Mission Impossible” television series. Agent Peter Graves, trained by Bill Mott, was second for the same condition that applies to this race when he rallied from well back in his most recent start at Gulfstream Park, earning a 92 Beyer Speed Figure that just so happens to be the winning par for this race. Several of his rivals also show 90-ish Beyers – or better, in the case of the 100 Beyer earned by Mister Mmmmm (post 3, Jared Loveberry) in a March allowance win over the Fair Grounds turf – and the toteboard figures to reflect the overall depth of this mix-and-match cast. Bettors will be enticed by the overall form of Chasing Artie (post 2, Luis Saez), or at least until they notice the three-time stakes winner has gone unraced since last September and is now entered for his first tag by owner-breeder Ken Ramsey. :: Take your handicapping to the next level and play with FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic.  Other considerations include All in Sync (post 4, Tyler Gaffalione), suddenly in for the $80,000 after competing in stakes in 10 of his last 11 starts; On Your Mark (post 5, James Graham), a sharp last-out allowance winner at Fair Grounds; Thanks Mr. Eidson (post 8, Ricardo Santana Jr.), a hard-knocking earner of more than $350,000; and He’smyhoneybadger (post 10, Florent Geroux), a stakes winner who would be making his grass debut, assuming the forecast for dry weather (cloudy, high of 60 degrees) holds true. In all, 16 are entered, with only as many as 12 allowed to start. The only other turf race of the day also happens to be the only other allowance. It will be run some 90 minutes earlier as race 5, with the British-bred Eidikos (post 2, John Velazquez) perhaps the filly to beat following a solid North American debut a little less than three weeks ago on the Keeneland turf. Joyful Applause, runner-up here last fall in the Grade 2 Mrs. Revere, is among the top challengers in the $127,000 first-level race going 1 1/16 miles. All listed purses include sizable bonuses restricted to registered Kentucky-breds. This will be the only Tuesday of a 44-day spring meet that runs through July 3. Racing during Derby week runs Tuesday through Saturday, with this being the only card of the week lacking a stakes race. The Mamzelle and the Isaac Murphy Marathon are the Wednesday co-features. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
