ARCADIA, Calif. – Turbulent Descent’s lone career defeat in the Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes at Santa Anita last month has not dimmed trainer Mike Puype’s outlook on the 3-year-old filly’s campaign. He expects her to start a new winning streak in Saturday’s $250,000 Santa Anita Oaks. “I don’t think she gave me a bad one the other day,” he said. “I think she just got tired. She’ll do better in this race for sure.” On Monday at Hollywood Park, Turbulent Descent had her final workout before the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks, breezing five furlongs in 1:00.60. Puype emphasized that Turbulent Descent was not fully extended under jockey David Flores. “It was breezing as far as I was concerned,” he said. “She just cantered.” The time was slower than Turbulent Descent’s five-furlong workout in 58.80 seconds on Feb. 21. “She’s running in five days,” Puype said. “She didn’t need a fast work before the race.” Turbulent Descent has won 3 of 4 starts, including the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet Stakes at Hollywood Park in December. In the Las Virgenes Stakes over a mile, she was beaten 1 1/4 lengths by Zazu, another starter in the Santa Anita Oaks, which is run over 1 1/16 miles. The Santa Anita Oaks will have a small field but will feature three Grade 1 winners. A Z Warrior, who won the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park last October, makes her first start since a last-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs on Nov. 5. She worked five furlongs in 59.60 seconds at Santa Anita on Monday. The other probable starters are Kilograeme, who is making her stakes debut, and Withgreatpleasure, winner of a maiden race Jan. 27. Comma to the Top gets a tune-up Comma to the Top, fourth in the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields on Feb. 12, worked five furlongs in 58.80 on Monday at Hollywood Park .The winner of the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park in December, Comma to the Top will make his next start in the $250,000 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita on March 12, a race that also will feature 2010 Norfolk Stakes winner Jaycito, who worked five furlongs in 58.60 at Santa Anita on Monday.
