HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Tumbarumba won a head bob over Castle Chaos, then survived a claim of foul by jockey Tyler Gaffalione aboard the runner-up to become a graded stakes winner for the first time after registering a hard-fought nose victory in Saturday’s $150,000 Fred W. Hooper Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Tumbarumba, whose only previous graded stakes experience was a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby four months earlier at Remington Park, showed his versatility shortening up to a one-turn mile after competing at nine furlongs in each of his last two starts. He parlayed a perfectly judged ride by Luis Saez into his fifth victory in just 11 career starts. Tumbarumba (97 Beyer Speed Figure) broke well from his outside post and rated within easy striking distance of the early pace set by Expressman and forced from the outset by the 6-5 favorite Hejazi. Tumbarumba rallied three wide to briefly join Hejazi approaching the stretch, dropped back several lengths turning for home, then re-asserted himself between horses through the final furlong, holding off Castle Chaos in the final strides to narrowly prevail. Castle Chaos advanced four wide to closer contention on the turn, loomed boldly just outside Tumbarumba through the final sixteenth but never could get to that rival in the drive to the wire. A claim of foul by Gaffalione, the rider of Castle Chaos, against the winner for alleged interference near the furlong marker was quickly dismissed. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Steal Sunshine hesitated briefly at the start and raced at the rear of the field in the run down the backstretch. He worked his way to closer contention on the turn, angled wide approaching the stretch and finished best of all to be third. Hejazi, coming off a second-place finish in the Grade 1 Malibu, disposed of Expressman after six furlongs, opened a seemingly commanding advantage through midstretch, then faltered suddenly to finish a tiring fourth. Tumbarumba, a son of Oscar Performance owned by Amerman Racing LLC, gave his trainer Brian Lynch his 14th winner from just 41 starters at the Championship meet.  Tumbarumba completed a mile over a fast track in 1:36.45 seconds and returned $18.80. “He’s such a neat horse because he’s an Oscar Performance who runs on the dirt,” Lynch said. “Game race today. Whenever he gets in a head bob sort of duel, he always seems to gut it out. And Luis [Saez] just fits him so well. He got a great stalking trip. “I thought Bob Baffert’s horse [Hejazi] was going to be very tough at the sixteenth pole. But we wore him down. It’s been a fantastic meet. We’ll just try to keep it going.” Inside Information “Perfect trip, perfect ride, perfect performance!” That’s how trainer Jorge Delgado summed up Olivia Darling’s impressive 2 1/4-length victory over Bluefield in the Grade 2, $200,000 Inside Information Stakes. The win was the fifth on the day for jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. Olivia Darling entered the seven-furlong Inside Information winless in five career starts at the distance. She was coming off arguably the best performance of her career when finishing third, beaten less than a length by Spirit Wind, when ridden by Ortiz for the first time in the six-furlong, Grade 3 Sugar Swirl in her 2023 finale. Olivia Darling (99 Beyer Speed Figure) broke alertly from the extreme outside in post 10 and took up a perfect stalking position behind the speedy pacesetter Sassy Nature. She readily assumed command midway on the turn, repulsed a mild bid from Intrepid Daydream when roused in early stretch and was never seriously menaced thereafter while kept under pressure to the end. Bluefield rallied mildly down the center of the course to be second best. Maryquitecontrary, the defending champion in the Inside Information, lagged near the rear of the field as usual during the early stages, made a brief run to closer contention while widest into the stretch but could not sustain the bid, finishing 2 1/4 lengths further back in third. Olivia Darling, a 5-year-old daughter of Palace, is owned by AMO Racing. She completed the distance over a fast track in 1:23.04 and paid $16. :: Bet with the Best! After that she was much sharper and was showing me all the good signs that she was going to run a big race today.” Delgado was pleased Ortiz had gotten a chance to ride Olivia Darling in the Sugar Swirl as a prelude to her victory in the Inside Information.’ “Having ridden her once, he knew her better, exactly how she was going to act and exactly what she had to give,” said Delgado. “And he gave her a perfect trip, a perfect ride.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
