The five runners in a seven-furlong allowance race/optional claimer at Santa Anita on Sunday range from an impeccably-bred 4-year-old colt to a 6-year-old gelding who bled in a race last month forcing a $20,000 claim to be voided. None of the five runners finished first in their last starts, and all have something to prove in the seventh race on an eight-race program that begins at 12:30 p.m. Pacific. Much of the focus will be on Triple Tap, a half-brother to 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, and Shaaz, a $1.1 million purchase as a 2-year-old in training in 2020. Both are trained by Bob Baffert and have yet to perform to expectations. The 4-year-old Triple Tap, owned by Summer Wind Equine, has won 2 of 3 starts since last March, but was a well-beaten fourth of seven in his stakes debut in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes at seven furlongs for 3-year-olds on Dec. 26. No one was going to beat the undefeated Flightline in the Malibu. He led throughout to record an easy victory by 11 1/2 lengths, but Triple Tap was beaten 7 1/4 lengths by runner-up Baby Yoda. :: Win big at Santa Anita: Get DRF Past Performances, Picks, Clocker Reports and Betting Strategies.  Since the Malibu, Triple Tap has worked quickly on several occasions, which is common for Baffert-trained runners. On Feb. 19, Triple Tap worked six furlongs in 1:11.80. John Velazquez will ride Triple Tap. Shaaz is technically undefeated. Owned by Michael Lund Petersen, Shaaz won his debut in a maiden special weight race at 6 1/2 furlongs on Dec. 26, closing from fifth of seven. In an allowance race at seven furlongs on Feb. 5, Shaaz finished second as the 3-10 favorite to Disco Ball, but was promoted to first when that rival was disqualified for causing interference in the stretch. Velazquez was aboard for those wins, but Juan Hernandez has the mount Sunday. The other three runners in Sunday’s race are entered to be claimed for $80,000 – Fore Left and Going With Style, who are trained by Britanny Vanden Berg, and Dark Vader, trained by Peter Eurton. :: Take your handicapping to the next level and play like a pro with free Formulator, DRF's premium data product Fore Left, a three-time stakes winner, was claimed for $40,000 when fifth in a six-furlong turf race Jan. 21. Going With Style was claimed for $20,000 when fourth in a race at 1 1/16 miles on Jan. 17, but the claim was voided when it was determined the gelding had bled. Dark Vader is lightly raced for a 7-year-old, having won 3 of 15 starts. Dark Vader has been second or third in five stakes, but was last of five in the Grade 3 Palos Verdes Stakes behind the Baffert-trained Essential Wager on Jan. 29. The Palos Verdes Stakes at six furlongs was Dark Vader’s first start since he finished last of six in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar last August. Eurton said Dark Vader was hampered by an inside draw in the Palos Verdes and should be better suited to an outside post in this small field. “When you draw the inside, he’s not that kind of horse,” Eurton said. “He’s athletic, but he’s not that fast. He can be tactical.”
