Trevor Denman is returning to the microphone at Del Mar this summer after a one-year hiatus. Denman was absent in 2020 because of the pandemic, remaining at his year-round home in Minnesota. The track announced his return in a statement released on Thursday. A popular voice with racing fans, Denman is well known for his approach of not only describing the position of runners, but adding in-race commentary that offers a critique of whether a horse is running poorly or, in one of his most familiar phrases, is “moving like a winner.” Denman has been race commentator at Del Mar since 1984.  Denman emigrated from his native South Africa in 1983, and began calling the races at Santa Anita at the Oak Tree meeting the fall of 1983. He became Santa Anita’s full-time announcer for the 1984-85 winter-spring meeting, and relinquished his position there in 2015.
