HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla - The celebrations were long over and it was back to business as usual Sunday morning at Gulfstream Park for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. and his staff. The team sent out nearly 20 horses to breeze during the morning, including the recently anointed Filly and Mare Sprint champion Soul of an Angel, who cruised an easy half-mile in a pedestrian 51.78 seconds over the main track shortly before 9:30 a.m. All this followed the most memorable afternoon of Joseph’s training career. He sent out the winners of three graded stakes, capped by White Abarrio’s sensational, 6 3/4-length victory over Locked in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational. Joseph reported Sunday that all three of his stakes winners, including Be Your Best (Grade 2 Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf) and Mystic Lake (Grade 2 Inside Information) came out of their races in good order, as did Skippylongstocking, who finished third, just a neck behind Locked, in the Pegasus World Cup. :: Play Gulfstream Park with confidence! Winning the Florida Derby here with White Abarrio was one and obviously the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint with Soul of an Angel last fall. "But this topped all that. The Pegasus is such a spectacular event, with racing and non-racing fans coming together. Winning one of the big races would have been enough, let alone three. And to top it off with White Abarrio, the story of getting him back and having him return to top form like that, made it such a very special moment for me.”   White Abarrio not only earned a 109 Beyer Speed Figure for his performance on Saturday, just a point below his career best in the 2023 Whitney, but he established a Pegasus World Cup record with his margin of victory. “I was really confident going into the race, his first work after the Mr. Prospector was spectacular, I’d never seen him work like that before,” Joseph said. “And he warmed up before the race so well. I knew if he just broke okay and got in the clear he’d be tough to beat. And that’s exactly how it played out.” Joseph said he’s uncertain at the moment what will be next for White Abarrio, although obviously the main goal is to try to get him to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic for a second time at the end of the season. “The Saudi Cup is still under consideration, the ownership group will make that decision at the end of the week, although as far as I know he hasn’t received an invitation to the race as of this morning,” Joseph said. “Other than that we’ll work backwards from the Breeders’ Cup to plan his schedule with races like the Whitney and Met Mile likely to be on that schedule.” Joseph also said he felt Skippylongstocking, who increased his lifetime earnings to over $3.65 million with his third-place finish, ran one of the best races of his career in the Pegasus World Cup. “We’ll probably consider bringing him back in the same two races he ran in last winter, the Challenger at Tampa Bay Downs, which got him back on track after being eased in the Pegasus, and the Oaklawn Handicap, which he also won pretty impressively a year ago.” Be Your Best won her third straight graded stakes on Saturday after withstanding a late rush by Grade 1 Sacred Wish to upset the Pegasus Filly and Mare Turf. She received a career-best 98 Beyer. “I thought it was a huge effort, moving a little earlier into a fast pace and being able to hold on like she did,” Joseph said. “Right now, trying to win a Grade 1 with her is our primary goal for the year.”    Mystic Lake was just as game holding off the 4-5 favorite Emery and Jody’s Pride to capture the Inside Information while matching her career-high 96 Beyer in the process. “She was very gutsy, she’s a speed horse and when she got challenged she really responded. She’s a filly with a lot of heart and has been like a dream the way she’s improved and now gone over $1 million in earnings,” Joseph said of Mystic Lake, who’ll be pointed to the Grade 1 Madison at Keeneland. As for Soul of an Angel, Joseph called her work strictly maintenance earlier that morning. “She was supposed to go a little faster than that, so I’ll put her in company next week,” Joseph said. Joseph said he still remains uncertain whether Soul of an Angel would make her next start in the Saudi Cup or join Mystic Lake at Keeneland in the Madison. “Her status for the Saudi Cup is still pending,” Joseph said. "We were led to believe she was going to be invited to the race, but as of this morning we’re still uncertain whether she will be or not. There’s really not much here for her unless we wanted to run her against the boys, so she’d likely head to the Madison as well if she doesn’t end up going to Saudi.” Trainer Todd Pletcher also reported Sunday morning that Locked, as well as his stablemate Crupi, who finished seventh in the Pegasus World Cup, came out of the race in good order. Locked ran arguably the best race of his career despite finishing a distant second as the 9-5 favorite after breaking last and enduring a wide trip in the main event. “He turned his head right as they kicked it,” Pletcher said. “I don’t want to discount White Abarrio’s performance, but we feel like we lost any chance of winning when that happened. We were already in a tough position to begin with from that post (10) and, in spite of all that, he ran on pretty well.” Pletcher feels Locked will be all the better for the experience as he moves forward through his 2025 campaign. “He did some things he hadn’t done before during the race,” Pletcher said. “He took the kickback really well, weaved his way through horses and still had his legs underneath him at the end. And he did all that at Gulfstream, which is not a deep closer's track. He got a lot of education. I was really proud of his effort.” Pletcher said he has nothing mapped out just yet for Locked’s next start. “We’ll see how he comes out of the race before making a game plan,” Pletcher said. “February 22 comes up awfully quick to go to Saudi, but it’s really still too early to make a decision or eliminate any possibilities at the moment.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
