Trainer Chris Richard, who is coming off a high-percentage meet at Delta Downs, is heading north. He said he plans to race at Keeneland this spring before setting up shop at Canterbury Park for the first time. “I had an opportunity to train for some breeders up there,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it.” Richard said the timing of the Canterbury meet is appealing, as he will ship back to Delta upon Canterbury’s conclusion in the middle of September. Delta opens its Thoroughbred meet in October. Richard won 14 races from 60 starts at this Delta meet. David headed to Evangeline Downs Trainer Sam David Jr. has been a fixture in Louisiana, but he’s never had a stable at Evangeline Downs since the track was moved to Opelousas. That will change when the meet opens April 4. David said he plans to be based there through end of the meet on Aug. 25. He is currently at Fair Grounds, where he had won 12 races from 55 starts through Tuesday. David also shipped into the Delta Downs meet that closed Saturday and won five races from 20 starts, including stakes with Bitsy’s Afleet and Hyper Piper. David said he will be bringing a number of Louisiana-breds to Evangeline. ◗ Karl Broberg won his seventh consecutive Delta Downs training title on Saturday night, with 83 wins from 354 starts. The 47-year-old Texas resident also led all trainers in stable earnings with $1.8 million. End Zone Athletics, in which Broberg is a partner, led all owners in wins with 43 from 175 starts. The stable earned $854,250. ◗ Diego Saenz, 39, won his fourth Delta Downs riding title with 109 wins from 435 starts. His mounts earned $2.3 million.
