Last year, the second time the $200,000 Sorority Stakes at Monmouth Park was run as a two-turn dirt mile, Parx Racing-based trainer Butch Reid sent an also-ran from the Schuylerville Stakes at Saratoga, Vedareo, to win. A year later, Reid has another Schuylerville also-ran, Kiss for Luck, entered in Sunday’s renewal of the Sorority. The pattern runs deeper. Like Vedareo, Kiss for Luck won her debut at Parx before racing in the Schuylerville. And Kiss for Luck is by Accelerate out of Vero Amore, making her a half-sister to the 2022 Sorority winner. Vedareo got a 62 Beyer Speed Figure in her winning debut, Kiss for Luck just a 36, but the two horses ran similarly dull races sprinting at Saratoga. Vedareo finished a well-beaten fifth, regressing to a 49 Beyer. Kiss for Luck barely appeared to lift her hooves last month, racing near the back of the field the entire trip while finishing last of seven. She did earn a 50 Beyer, and Frankie Pennington, who rode Vedareo, comes to take the mount. :: Bet with the Best! Get Free DRF PPs and Cashback when you wager. Join DRF Bets. Among the eight entrants is Wine On Tap, fourth as the even-money Schuylerville favorite. Wine On Tap wasn’t beaten far in the Schuylerville, where she ran with the stride cadence of a filly who should suit two turns. She’s the first foal to race out of Princess La Quinta, a Grade 3 winner over 1 1/8 miles, and while trainer Todd Pletcher hasn’t started a horse in the brief dirt-mile history of the Sorority, he has won the last two editions of the Sapling Stakes, a two-turn Monmouth dirt mile for 2-year-olds open to colts and geldings. Trainer Gary Contessa won the Schuylerville with a maiden, Becky’s Joker, and has another maiden, Classy Mischief, entered in the Sorority. Classy Mischief also is entered main track only in a Sunday turf route at Saratoga, but since leading Monmouth rider Paco Lopez is named, she figures to ship to New Jersey. Classy Mischief’s first two races were supposed to be on turf but were taken off the turf at Saratoga. She’s by Into Mischief and her dam, Classofsixtythree, has produced Gunmetal Gray, winner of the Grade 3 Sham over one mile, and Sixtythreecaliber, who captured the 2022 Comely Stakes at 1 1/8 miles. Princess Indy won her Monmouth debut well before finishing a distant fifth in the Adirondack at Saratoga. Leading Monmouth trainer Claudio Gonzalez is 3 for 32 the last five years in 2-year-old stakes races. The pick is Lagonisi, who already has run a dirt route, winning an off-turf Delaware Park maiden race by more than eight lengths July 29. One can see why this filly, by Uncle Mo, was entered for turf; as she runs with a high, turf-like action. But while Lagonisi clearly beat a field of questionable quality, she did earn a 52 Beyer and has the appearance of a strong, physically advanced horse who is more than ready to stay a trip many in the Sorority will fail to handle. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
