DEL MAR, Calif. – Trainer Peter Miller said he received a phone call Saturday night from owner Gary Hartunian of Rockingham Ranch, who asked, “Did that really happen today?” Hartunian was referring to the pair’s Breeders’ Cup wins with Stormy Liberal in the Turf Sprint and Roy H in the Sprint. Miller, whose feat arguably earned him the No. 2 star on Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup program at Del Mar behind only Classic winner Gun Runner, said his reply was simply, “Everyone is telling me it did.” By Sunday morning, the enormity of the accomplishment still had not totally sunk in. “To be honest, it was kind of a surreal experience, just incredible,” said Miller, who resides 10 minutes from Del Mar in Encinitas. “I expected all of my Breeders’ Cup starters to run well, but how many times will you think that and then go 0 for 4?. To run one-two in one Breeders’ Cup race and win a second is pretty crazy. A lot of great trainers have never won a Breeders’ Cup race, and here we went and won two in one day.” Miller, who first took out his trainer’s license in 1987, has had many memorable days, but nothing that compared with what happened within about a two-hour span Saturday. He had never won a Breeders’ Cup race prior to Saturday, coming closest in 2013, when Reneesgotzip finished second, beaten a half-length, in the Turf Sprint at Santa Anita. “All the Grade 1’s we’ve won, like the CashCall Futurity, the Del Mar Debutante, were all memorable, of course,” Miller said on Sunday. “And we’ve done some other good things, like winning four in one day and finishing in a dead heat for first last winter at Santa Anita in a Grade 3 (Midnight Lute Stakes), which is pretty cool. But nothing compares to yesterday.” Miller said all four of his Breeders’ Cup starters, including Calculator, who finished seventh in the Sprint, came out of their races in good order. “They all look good this morning,” said Miller. “We trotted them all, and they all look happy.” Miller said Roy H, a virtual shoo-in to be named the Eclipse Award champion sprinter in 2017, is definitely done for the year.  “My owners mentioned the Hong Kong Sprint for him, but I think I talked them off the ledge,” said Miller. “We won’t send him to the farm, we’ll just back off him, freshen him up, and look to run at Santa Anita in whatever the first big sprint is next year.” Miller said Stormy Liberal could go to Hong Kong later this year. “Stormy Liberal would be the one if we took anything to Hong Kong because he was coming off a five-month break and is fairly fresh,” said Miller. “Richard’s Boy will probably get a short break since he’s run hard all year. “ And what will Miller do for an encore? “We’ll try to come back and do it again next year,” he said.
