Karl Broberg, who operates one of the nation’s most successful racing stables, is stepping away from training at the track in order to develop young horses at his farm, he announced Friday.  Broberg, 53, will continue to own horses of racing age, and those runners will be trained by Abel Ramirez. He said in an interview with Daily Racing Form that he also will be working as a bloodstock agent, finding yearlings for clients and himself.  The plan is to develop those young runners at his farm, which is located near Delta Downs in Vinton, La. Broberg has been developing young horses on that farm since he bought the property about three years ago. It features a five-furlong training track and an 85-stall barn.  :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. Broberg’s racing operation has been highly active in the claiming game and for years he has expressed concern about the reduction in horse population. The shift to developing young horses full time was something he said he began thinking about in 2020.  “The claiming game at the majority of the tracks that I have historically run at is gone,” he said. “I figured it would be a great time to take a step back, work to buy yearlings, see if we can do some pinhooking, or just help get horses ready for other people.  “In the next few years, you are going to see so many more fall to the wayside. I just want to make sure I’m ahead of it.”  Broberg was an owner before he became a trainer and he won his first race as a trainer on Nov. 7, 2009. He would go on to lead North American trainers in wins for six consecutive years from 2014-2019. Broberg also became just the third trainer in history to reach a milestone of 500 wins in a calendar year, behind Steve Asmussen and Scott Lake.  Broberg said he achieved the goals he set for himself as a trainer when he led his peers in wins in North America. Those numbers were built by winning a slew of training titles across the Southwest, many of them in Louisiana at Delta Downs.   Broberg also was pleased with how quickly he was able to build his win total. He had 4,902 training victories through Thursday, from 20,984 starts. His trainees have earned $83 million.  “Fifteen years, 4,900 wins,” he said. “Nobody’s ever put a total close to that together in their first 15 years [training].”  Broberg said he has no intent of pushing for a milestone number of 5,000.  “The reason this needed to happen now,” he said, “is because I’m 30 wins behind D. Wayne Lukas, who was my childhood idol, and I refuse to surpass him.”  Broberg ranks tenth in all-time trainer wins, according to a chart published by Equibase.  Broberg will be active as an owner at the upcoming meet at Remington.  “Abel is at Remington Park currently,” Broberg said. “He’ll have a large string at Delta Downs, Oaklawn. And then following the Oaklawn meet, I believe he is going to work hard to get into Kentucky since soon there will only be a few states left. So, he knows he better be there.”  Broberg said he will be spending the bulk of his time at his farm in Louisiana. He also will be taking some vacations.  “I’m going to Saratoga next week,” he said, “Del Mar right after that, then Santa Anita and later, Royal Ascot.”  He’s looking forward to playing the races at those venues. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
