With virtually no fanfare, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed S3921/A5090 on January 30, allowing the state funds which formerly went to Freehold Raceway to be used for overnight purses at the Meadowlands. The bills, sponsored by Senator Paul Sarlo and Assemblyman Clinton Calabrese, were passed by the Senate 38-0 and Assembly 70-0-1 on December 19 last year.

For many trainers it's been a struggle to get horses they put in the entry box at the Meadowlands to race on the Friday-Saturday programs. For trainer Bill Mackenzie, a longtime New Jersey-based horseman, it has been tricky, but he's managed to get his stock raced with a few minor exceptions. This weekend he will have six spanning the two cards, with excellent chances of success.

What's better than a carryover? A double carryover, of course, and after a 14-race Friday night program at the Meadowlands that saw precisely zero favorites emerge victorious, players will no doubt come out betting with both hands on the 20-cent Pick 6 Saturday, which will begin with a carryover of $21,413.

Handicapping is very much a learning experience that doesn't end the second the horses cross the finish line. Every time you examine a set of past performances and make a wager it is vital to consider what occurred, especially when the results are not in agreement with your betting actions.

Back in the early 1990s when I started following harness racing the Dexter Cup at Freehold Raceway was considered the first step on the Road to the Hambletonian. That track is of course off the schedule now and the Dexter Cup has moved on to The Meadowlands, but it is worth pondering the race’s place in history and where it fits in the future.

It's been said by some that horseplayers are a dying breed. That people die every day shouldn't come as a surprise, but successful industries throughout the world do their best not to market for the past and focus on the future when planning the next chapter. Technology changes more rapidly than generations, forcing all successful companies to pivot or be caught out in the cold.

Lauren Tritton was an accomplished Australian driver with 920 wins when she came to the United States back in March 2020 with her husband Shane. Despite her countless successes in stakes races in her homeland, she decided to hang up her colors to concentrate on building a stable and expanding her family. After making just seven trips behind the gate in her first two years stateside, she got the “itch” again and has since won 65 of 284 starts (22.8%) of her races.
