Tortosa ($13) made his turf and stakes debut a winning one as he came from last to wear down pacesetting Unpossible in the lane to win the $75,000 Alcatraz Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on Sunday. The 3-year-old colt by Cape Blanco scored his third straight victory. He was last down the backstretch in the field of five in the one-mile turf stakes. He circled the field four wide on the second turn, moving into second, a length behind Unpossible, who had run second in the $100,000 Silky Sullivan in his turf debut in his last start. Tortosa moved even with Respect the Hustle, the lone turf winner in the field, sticking his head in front as Unpossible slipped back to third. Tortosa was still wide but had clear running down the lane as he began to inch away from his rivals. He was three-quarters of a length in front of Unpossible at the wire with Respect the Hustle a nose back. Winning time was 1:37.48. The Theresa and Edward DeNike homebred nearly doubled his career earnings with his $45,000 payday. He has now earned $94,185 with three wins and three seconds in eight career starts.
