ARCADIA, Calif. – The significance of a mundane eight-race program Friday at Santa Anita is limited to betting. Every race has a claiming provision, including the featured sixth race, a California-bred allowance/optional-claiming turf sprint for 3-year-olds. Maiden winners Bro Bro and Roman Gratis top the five-furlong race, which is only the second turf race at the distance this meet. The race is short, and reasonable wagering opportunities Friday are scarce. Perhaps an exception is the opener, which offers a chance at a square price. Race 1: A field of six fillies and mares is set for this starter allowance for nonwinners of two at six furlongs on turf. It is a race Becky’s Dream is qualified to win as she drops from entry-level allowance races. Becky’s Dream is quick enough to set or press the pace in a race relatively light on speed. The main pace rival for Becky’s Dream is My Kathryn Rose, who gets blinkers for the first time. If those two avoid a head-and-head duel, they could make it a parade over a turf course that has recently favored speed at six furlongs – six of the last nine were won by the pacesetter, at a variety of rail settings. :: Playing Santa Anita? Becky’s Dream is trained by Hector Palma and reunited Friday with jockey Tiago Pereira. It’s a hot combo. Palma and Pereira’s upsets this meet include Heart Headed ($35), El Rey Rey ($10.60), Tam’s Little Angel ($35.80), and Wishtheyallcouldbe ($43.20). Race 2: The filly Fire Ban is likely to start as the day’s lowest-odds favorite following a highly rated runner-up finish at the same $50,000 maiden-claiming level. The winner of Fire Ban’s race, Running Super, validated the race by winning a starter allowance in her next start. Fire Ban finished 11 lengths clear of third, earned an above-par 79 Beyer Speed Figure, and looks tough to beat. Brian Koriner trains Fire Ban, whose rider is Frank Alvarado. Drawn outside in the five-runner field, Fire Ban offers negligible value. Race 5: Seven Northern California-restricted maidens are featured in this one-mile contest with an $8,000 claiming tag. Grinding late-runner Bruiser is the choice after being overmatched against $20,000 maiden claimers. Bruiser is scheduled to be ridden by Kazushi Kimura, who resumes riding Friday after recovering from a Jan. 16 injury. Bruiser is trained by Bill McLean. Two of the eight races Friday are restricted to horses and horsemen recently based in Northern California. While favorites this meet have won 45 percent overall; the win rate of favorites is higher in races tailored to Northern California horses and horsemen – 52 percent (26 for 50). Race 6: Roman Gratis may steal Friday’s featured allowance. A front-running maiden winner on dirt, Roman Gratis is the speed of the field under jockey Edwin Maldonado. At five furlongs, he could be gone in his first try on turf. He is by Stanford, whose progeny are fine on turf. Luis Mendez trains Roman Gratis. However, debut winner Bro Bro has enough speed to keep Roman Gratis in his sights. Bro Bro is trained by Doug O’Neill and will be ridden again by Mario Gutierrez. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
