ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Jose Luis Campos, one of the leading jockeys in Mexico, makes his Woodbine debut on Luz de La Luna in Friday’s fifth race for fillies and mares, which combines nonwinners-of-two allowance types with $50,000-claiming 3-year-olds. A native of Puebla, Mexico, the 31-year-old Campos has also ridden in California, France, and Saudi Arabia. He hopes to stay on for the remainder of the Woodbine meet, according to his agent, the retired jockey Gerry Olguin, who also secured him the mount on Jolene Jolene in the eighth race. “We’re excited to get started here,” said Olguin, who also represents journeyman Luis Contreras. Trained by Nathan Squires, Luz de La Luna is stepping up off a drop-down score over $25,000 nonwinners-of-two rivals traveling seven furlongs on the Tapeta. Her turf form is mediocre, although she did finish third in a nine-furlong conditioned event on July 1. Scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on the main turf, the fifth lured a field of seven that also includes She Makes a Point, Gal Wonder, and Valid Vixen. All three were protagonists in a 1 1/16-mile Tapeta event on Sept. 3. She Makes a Point could go favored off a narrow loss Sept. 3, during which she awaited room on the far turn before making a steady bid. The daughter of Point of Entry was competitive in two of her three grass races, finishing fourth behind Valid Vixen and Gal Wonder over nine furlongs on Aug. 6. Declan Carroll retains the mount on She Makes a Point and is 2 for 16 for her trainer, Catherine Day Phillips. Gal Wonder, a blue-blooded daughter of Galileo, was competitive in handicaps last year in England. She was a beaten favorite in all three of her starts here this summer, finishing a flat third on different surfaces in her last two outings. Justin Stein will ride Gal Wonder again for trainer Josie Carroll. :: DRF Bets members get FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic. Join now! Valid Vixen graduated over 1 1/4 miles on the main course here July 21 before ending up second to shipper Gizala on Aug. 6. The Tapeta isn’t her surface of choice, and she was a fading fourth as the 4-1 third choice on Sept. 3. Eswan Flores has been booked to ride Valid Vixen again by owner-trainer Nick Nosowenko. Lady Brew is coming off an overdue maiden-special win on the Tapeta. She was previously a trailing fifth behind Sister Seagull in the Bison City Stakes. The red-hot rider Rafael Hernandez, who is second in the standings, is sticking with Silver Magnatized after guiding Luz de La Luna to victory on Sept. 18. Trained by Kevin Attard, Silver Magnatized defeated $25,000 conditioned-claiming opposition in her last two outings, both on the inner turf. Rounding out the fifth-race field is Amazin Queen, who wasn’t a factor in two starts after clearing the first allowance condition on July 23. Post time for Friday’s nine-race card is 1:10 p.m. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
