HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Timberlake will be part of a field of 13 when he makes his first start since the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in the Grade 2, $1.25 million Rebel Stakes on Saturday at Oaklawn Park. Entries for the 1 1/16-mile race were drawn Sunday. It anchors a 12-race card that will have a special first post of noon Central. There are a total of four stakes on the card, including the Grade 3, $600,000 Razorback Handicap that also drew 13 and the Grade 3, $400,000 Honeybee that will reward the first five finishers with points toward the Kentucky Oaks on a 50-25-15-10-5 basis. The Rebel carries the same points value for the Kentucky Derby. :: KENTUCKY DERBY 2024: Derby Watch, point standings, prep schedule, news, and more Timberlake last raced Nov. 3 and was fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita. Prior to the race, he had won the Grade 1 Champagne and that victory at racing’s highest level makes him the most accomplished member of the Rebel field.  Timberlake also leads his Rebel field rivals in Kentucky Derby points with 16, which places him 13th on the overall leaderboard administered by Churchill Downs. Timberlake will start from post 7 on Saturday. Trainer Brad Cox has given the mount to Oaklawn leading rider Cristian Torres.  Steve Asmussen, who leads the trainer standings at Oaklawn, will counter with three runners – Carbone, Dimatic, and Lagynos. Kenny McPeek, the second leading trainer at the meet coming off a win in the Southwest with Mystik Dan, is set to saddle Northern Flame and Common Defense. Just Steel, runner-up in the Southwest, drew post 11 for the Rebel. Ramon Vazquez has the mount for trainer D. Wayne Lukas. Just Steel has 15 points for the Kentucky Derby to rank 14th. The complete Rebel field from the rail with riders is: Carbone, Isaac Castillo; Northern Flame, Julien Leparoux; Common Defense, Brian Hernandez Jr.; Tejon Pass, Chris Landeros; Magic Grant, Harry Hernandez; Dimatic, Tyler Gaffalione; Timberlake, Torres; Next Level, Jose Riquelme; Lagynos, Keith Asmussen; Mena, Francisco Arrieta; Just Steel, Vazquez; Woodcourt, Emmanuel Esquivel; and Time for Truth, Rafael Bejarano. Tejon Pass worked five furlongs on Sunday morning at Oaklawn, going in 1:00.20. Time for Truth was on the same tab, going a half-mile in 50 seconds. The works came over a fast track, which opened a little later than scheduled Sunday because of temperatures in the high 20s. The forecast for Saturday is sunny skies and a high of 66 degrees, according to AccuWeather. The Rebel purse is at a record level for this year’s running. Last season, the race was worth $1 million when Confidence Game won for Don’t Tell My Wife Stables and trainer Keith Desormeaux. The same connections are represented in this year’s running with Next Level, who comes off a runner-up finish to Woodcourt in a local allowance prep on Jan. 28. Oaklawn’s increase to the Rebel purse comes in the same season in which the Arkansas Derby’s value has been boosted to $1.5 million from $1.25 million. The 1 1/8-mile race will be run March 30. The Honeybee field of 10 from the rail with riders is Alys Beach, Leparoux; Band of Gold, Brian Hernandez Jr.; Honor Cat, Harry Hernandez; Neom Beach, Gaffalione; Edistrudis, Castillo; West Omaha, Torres; Lemon Muffin, Keith Asmussen; Tapit Jenallie, Esquivel; In Just My Heels, Bejarano; and Midshipman’s Dance, Vazquez. In Just My Heels worked a half-mile in 48 seconds on Sunday at Oaklawn. Ain’t Life Grand, who in his last start was third in the Grade 3 Cornhusker last July at Prairie Meadows, drew post 4 for the Razorback. He meets a field that includes Octane, a multiple stakes-winning Florida-bred who is pushing $700,000 in earnings. The $150,000 Carousel field of nine includes Mucho Macho Girl, a half-sister to multiple Grade 2-winning millionaire Hoist the Gold. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
