ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Thundering had worked brilliantly prior to his debut, a third-place finish that he seemingly needed, and he graduated in style in Sunday’s $125,250 Display Stakes at Woodbine. With Eswan Flores aboard, Thundering sat about two lengths off the pace on the backstretch while War of Destiny led before Mansetti assumed command on the turn in the seven-furlong sprint for 2-year-olds. Thundering ($23.90) made his way to the lead at the head of the stretch and then opened up a clear advantage before holding off a wide-closing Bucaro to score by 1 1/4 lengths, in a time of 1:23.64. Favored He’s Not Joking checked in third and was followed by Cairo Caper, War of Destiny and Mansetti. :: Bet with the Best! Get FREE All-Access PPs and Weekly Cashback when you wager on DRF Bets. Maryland-bred Thundering earned $75,000 for Dastur Racing and trainer Patrick Dixon. The son of Mosler was scratched as an also eligible last Sunday from a maiden race. “We always really liked this horse,” Dixon said. “We were going to run him, but he drew the 13-hole and if he did draw in, he was going to end up on the wide outside. We went to Plan B. We nominated to the stakes because we loved him so much, so we said let’s give him a try. Coming out of that first race, he was like a bear. He always has to do something once before he figures it out. That’s his demeanor.” *** Favored Winterberry and a charging Charlotte’s Heart gave trainer Mike Casse a sweep of the exacta in Sunday’s $143,000 Glorious Song Stakes for 2-year-old fillies. Winterberry ($3.40) came wide from a stalking position to take control midway on the turn in the seven-furlong sprint. Charlotte’s Heart rallied stoutly from a trailing sixth to finish three-quarters of a length shy of Winterberry, who covered the distance in a quick 1:22.92. Nata Trouble, Miss Saugerties, Neenah and Souper Supreme completed the order of finish. The Glorious Song was the first time that Sahin Civaci rode the quirky Winterberry in a race. “Before she ever ran her first race, I got on her and worked her a couple times, and she’s a pretty nice horse,” Civaci said. “I thought (Souper Supreme) would be on the lead. I don’t think we both had a good start. I was in a comfortable spot - had to take a wide trip, but the horses up front tired. I managed to get inside and she kicked on.” An Ontario-bred daughter of Frosted, Winterberry collected $90,000 for D J Stable. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
