ETOBICOKE, Ontario – A dramatic five-horse spill in Friday’s first race at Woodbine sent jockeys Edgar Zenteno, Justin Stein, and Da-Sean Gaskin to hospital.  Zenteno’s mount, No Layups, appeared to clip heels with the front-running favorite Whiskey N Ice in the five-furlong dash and went down on the turn. The incident triggered a chain reaction of horses dislodging their riders. All five horses were eventually corralled and appeared to escape injury.  Woodbine’s communications department posted an update on all three riders.  “Edgar spent the night doing more tests and they revealed a broken left shoulder bone and a bone in his neck,” said his agent, Madison Meli. “He is resting well and will be in recovery at home soon.” Stein’s wife, Jennifer, said Justin suffered multiple fractures. “Justin sustained three vertebrae fractures in his lower thoracic, T11, T12, and L1 and a broken rib,” she said. “As long as he is able to walk [Saturday], he can come home and start the recovery process. Thank you to everyone for your well wishes.”  Agent Mike Lym reported that Gaskin underwent tests inhospital and is under concussion protocol. “Da-Sean is in great spirits and hopes to be back in action as soon as possible,” Lym said. Whiskey N Ice was disqualified from first to last in the $10,000 maiden claimer. The remainder of the card went off without incident. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
