SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Making Thorpedo Anna’s victory in Friday’s Grade 1 Acorn Stakes at Saratoga more impressive than the 5 1/2-length margin over Leslie’s Rose was the fact she did it on three shoes. Trainer Kenny McPeek said Saturday that Thorpedo Anna lost her right front shoe in the Acorn, something he believes happened at the break. McPeek said Thorpedo Anna’s foot was “a little tender” but otherwise she was fine. McPeek said the foot was packed in poultice Friday night. “The blacksmith’s already addressed it,” McPeek said. McPeek said Thorpedo Anna would make her next start in the Grade 1, $500,000 Coaching Club American Oaks on July 20 at Saratoga. The Coaching Club could lead to a start in the Grade 1, $600,000 Alabama, also at Saratoga on Aug. 17. Beyond that, there is the Grade 1, $1 million Cotillion on Sept. 21 at Parx Racing. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! She won the Kentucky Oaks by 4 1/4 lengths and before that the Grade 2 Fantasy at Oaklawn by four lengths. McPeek has talked about running Thorpedo Anna against males at some point this year. Where or if that happens could depend on what happens with Mystik Dan, the Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness runner-up who was set to run in Saturday’s $2 million Belmont Stakes. The Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers is Aug. 24 at Saratoga and the Grade 1, $1 million Pennsylvania Derby is Sept. 21 at Parx Racing. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
