Trainer Randy Morse is tied atop the Oaklawn Park standings after opening weekend and will attempt to keep the barn’s momentum rolling Saturday with Grade 2 winner Taxed in the $150,000 Mistletoe. She should go favored in the one-mile race that launches the meet’s filly and mare route series that culminates with the Apple Blossom Handicap. The Mistletoe, which will end at the sixteenth pole, drew a field of seven. Deck of Cards is a winner of seven of her last eight starts and Tapit Jenallie was third in last season’s Grade 2 Fantasy won by Thorpedo Anna. Corningstone, a three-time stakes winner, and Stellar Lilly, a specialist at the distance, were both cross-entered in the She’s All In Stakes that was to have been run Friday night at Remington Park. :: Bet with the Best! Taxed enters the Mistletoe off a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Chilukki, a one-turn mile race at Churchill Downs won by Two Sharp. “I think she could have been second that day,” Morse said. “She was following a horse that just stopped right in front of her in the middle of the turn and she lost a lot of momentum. “I sure believe she should have been second in that race. She wasn’t going to beat the winner. The winner’s a really good filly. Really good. She’s Grade 1-type.” Taxed, an earner of $745,894 who races for Richard Bahde, will start from post 7 under Cristian Torres. “I like that she drew outside,” Morse said. “[Cristian] doesn’t have to choose what he’s doing away from the gate. He can see how the race is developing and go from there because she can lay close or she can be farther back if it’s a fast pace. It looks like it will be a pretty good pace, to me, just looking at the [Daily Racing] Form.” Deck of Cards is making her stakes debut after starting her career 8 for 12. Her one loss in her last eight starts came last out at Horseshoe Indianapolis when she was a troubled third in a first-level allowance on Oct. 16. Prior to that, Deck of Cards had won three straight starter races between Saratoga and Churchill. The wins came at both one and two turns, with one of them at the one-mile distance of the Mistletoe. Deck of Cards began her streak on the synthetic track at Turfway Park and appeared to have stepped up her game even more when moved to dirt, where she has put up her best Beyer Speed Figures. Ramon Vazquez, who has won the first two stakes of the meet, has the mount on the daughter of Nyquist for trainer Mike Maker. Corningstone is moving back into open company after running third in the statebred Cardinal Handicap at Horseshoe Indianapolis. The race has become a key one, with the runner-up and fifth-place finisher both returning to win allowance races in Indiana. Corningstone was second in the Grade 2 Locust Grove at Churchill one start prior to the Cardinal. Julien Leparoux has the mount from post 5 for trainer Kenny McPeek. Stellar Lily has registered two of her three career wins at Oaklawn with both victories coming at one mile. Rafael Bejarano has the mount for trainer Ron Moquett. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
