Tawny Port, who finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby seven weeks ago, won Saturday's Grade 3, $500,000 Ohio Derby at Thistledown. White Abarrio was second and Classic Causeway was third, with the top three all appearing for the first time since the first Saturday in May. Tawny Port ($4.60), who is trained by Brad Cox for Peachtree Stable, was making his sixth start of the year in the Ohio Derby after doing a fair bit of running to make the Kentucky Derby starting gate. The colt was fifth in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes in February, then was second on synthetic in the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby at Turfway Park - with eventual upset Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike in third. Seeking a few more points toward the Derby starting gate, as well as dirt form to prove he belonged, he ran back two weeks later in the Grade 3 Lexington at Keeneland, where he rallied to win by a length. In the Kentucky Derby, Tawny Port was 14th through three-quarters with a rapid pace up front, then improved his position before flattening out. However, he was just 4 3/4 lengths behind the victorious Rich Strike, and gave a good account of himself by finishing just more than three lengths out of third. The Pioneerof the Nile colt went on to work strongly at his Churchill Downs base in preparation for the second half of his season. :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! Classic Causeway, making his first start for trainer Ken McPeek after finishing 11th in the Kentucky Derby for Brian Lynch, showed his good early speed from the outside post in the field of seven, while hounded by longshot Pineapple Man to his inside. They zipped the opening quarter in 22.82 seconds before getting the half in a more reasonable 47.08. White Abarrio, winner of the Grade 1 Florida Derby before finishing 16th in Kentucky, was content to watch them from third as, meanwhile, Tawny Port was settled back in fifth under Irad Ortiz Jr. Around the far turn, Pineapple Man began a steady retreat, and Classic Causeway shook loose to lead by 1 1/2 lengths, as White Abarrio revved up on his outside. But Tawny Port was making a sweeping move four wide as Ortiz pushed strongly on his neck. He began to edge clear of a stubborn Classic Causeway in upper stretch, then had enough left to easily hold off a charging White Abarrio by a length at the wire. He finished the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.46 and getting a 90 Beyer Speed Figure. White Abarrio was a clear second, 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Classic Causeway. White Abarrio, winner of the Grade 3 Holy Bull before the Florida Derby, still has yet to win in three starts away from Gulfstream Park, although with a pair of graded stakes placings in those efforts. Classic Causeway, winner of the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis and Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby earlier this year, showed improved form off a pair of unplaced efforts, as he faded badly after reportedly flipping his palate in the Florida Derby, then was never involved after being bothered at the start of the Kentucky Derby. He was five lengths clear of Barese, followed, in order, by Droppin G's, Ethereal Road, and Pineapple Man. Brigadier General was scratched in order to target the upcoming Grade 3 Indiana Derby.
