DEL MAR, Calif. - The hype is real. She’s her mother’s daughter. Tamara, the filly with championship bloodlines, jumped to the fore of the nation’s juvenile filly division with an elegant win in her stakes debut in Saturday’s Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante at Del Mar. Tamara won the seven-furlong race with such ease that Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith was left in awe of her potential as major races such as the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita on Nov. 3 draw closer. Tamara stalked pacesetter Pushiness to the turn before drawing away to win by 6 3/4 furlongs, finishing in 1:22.41. Tamara earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 91. “I had a vision that she’d pull away, but not like that,” Smith said. “I let her switch leads and I looked and I was opening up on the field. I hadn’t moved a finger. :: Get Del Mar Clocker Reports straight from the morning workouts at the track. That’s all I did. “It was very impressive.” Tamara ($4.60) is by Bolt d’Oro and is out of Beholder, the 2022 Hall of Fame inductee who won four championships from 2012 to 2016 in a career that included 18 wins in 28 starts and earnings of $6,156,600. Tamara is trained by Richard Mandella for owner and breeder Spendthrift Farm. Mandella trained Beholder. In the 12-runner Del Mar Debutante, which had a purse of $303,500, Tamara broke from post 8 and was away in good order. Pushiness, who was ridden by Umberto Rispoli, set early fractions of 21.85 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 44.45 for a half-mile, leading by a length at that point. Very quickly, Tamara passed Pushiness to take the lead. “She flew by me,” Rispoli said of Tamara. “I think she’s something special.” Tamara led by four lengths with a furlong remaining and was not urged through the final furlong. Laurent, a maiden race winner in her debut on Aug. 13, closed from ninth to finish second at 7-1 for trainer Peter Eurton. “She’s still very green,” Eurton said. “She’s Grade 1-placed and she’s still learning.” Gate to Paradise (10-1) closed from sixth to finish third in her second start. Gate to Paradise was third in her debut in a maiden race on July 30. “I’m proud of her,” jockey Kent Desormeaux said of Gate to Paradise. Chatalas, who won the July 30 maiden race, finished fourth in the Del Mar Debutante, followed by Next Right Thing, Motet, Pushiness, Julias Dream, Benedetta, Pretty Layla, Hope Road and Cheeky Gal. Dreamfyre, winner of the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes on Aug. 12, was scratched on Saturday morning after trainer O.J. Jauregui said she had lost her appetite in recent days. The longshot Where’s My Ring was scratched at the gate after falling on her side. Tamara won her debut in a maiden race at 6 1/2 furlongs on Aug. 19, overcoming a poor start to win by 2 1/4 lengths under Smith. Eurton, as one observer, saw an impressive victory that day by Tamara. His opinion had not changed on Saturday evening. “I watched her maiden win like she was a 5-year-old mare,” Eurton said “We have a lot of catching up to do.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
