ARCADIA, Calif. - The regally bred filly Tamara will race at 1 1/16 miles for the first time in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita on Nov. 3. The closer the race gets, the more jockey Mike Smith and trainer Richard Mandella think the filly can handle a longer distance in a race in which she is projected to be a solid favorite. On Sunday at Santa Anita, Hall of Famer Smith, 58, spoke confidently of Tamara’s chances after she worked six furlongs in 1:12.60, and galloped out seven furlongs in 1:25. “She’s some filly,” Smith said. “If it all goes well … she’s something.” Tamara, who races for owner and breeder Spendthrift Farm, is unbeaten in two starts, including the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante by 6 3/4 lengths at seven furlongs at Del Mar on Sept. 9. :: DRF Breeders' Cup Packages on sale now! From Smith’s point of view, Tamara’s familiarity with Santa Anita’s layout during morning training, and particularly the first turn, will be a benefit in the BC Juvenile Fillies. “You worry about that more at a new track,” Smith said. “Most of her works have been past the wire. She’s run into that turn.” Tamara had her longest workout on Sunday, and will have one more major exercise before the BC Juvenile Fillies. “It looks like going farther works for her,” Mandella said. Tamara is by Bolt d’Oro, and is out of the Hall of Famer Beholder, a four-time champion trained by Mandella for Spendthrift. In other notable works on Sunday, Adare Manor and Clairiere, two contenders for the BC Distaff for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles on Nov. 4, had quick works at five furlongs. Adare Manor, who won her fifth consecutive race in the Grade 2 Zenyatta Stakes by 5 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita on Oct. 1 for trainer Bob Baffert, was timed in 59 seconds, the fastest of 54 works at the distance. :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2023: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more for each division Clairiere, who won two Grade 1 races in the spring, but was fifth in her last start in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes at 1 1/8 miles at Saratoga on Aug. 25, was timed in 59.80 seconds. Clairiere, trained by Steve Asmussen, galloped out six furlongs in 1:12.60. Clairiere has had three workouts at Santa Anita this month. “She runs well fresh,” said Scott Blasi, Asmussen’s assistant. “I’m glad we’re out here early and putting the works in.” Two other Baffert-trained runners were among the fast workers on Sunday. Speed Boat Beach, a game second by a head in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship on Sept. 30 in his first start of the year, worked six furlongs from the gate in 1:11, the quickest of seven works at the distance. Speed Boat Beach is a candidate for the BC Sprint at six furlongs. Prince of Monaco, Baffert’s leading hope for the BC Juvenile at 1 1/16 miles on Nov. 3, worked six furlongs from the gate in 1:12. Unbeaten in three starts, Prince of Monaco has not raced since a win in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs on Sept. 10. Practical Move to Dirt Mile The three-time stakes winner Practical Move will start in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita on Nov. 4 and will not run in the Classic at 1 1/4 miles the same day, trainer Tim Yakteen said on Sunday. Practical Move has won his last four starts, including the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby in April. He missed the Kentucky Derby a month later because of illness, and returned to win an allowance race at a mile by four lengths on Oct. 6. :: Get Breeders' Cup Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the DRF Clocker Team when you purchase a BC VIP Package! “I think the appeal of the mile is we have one race under our belt,” Yakteen said. “He’s proven at the distance. “The mile and a quarter is an unknown. I would like to have had another race under his belt to go a mile and quarter.” Owned by Pierre and Leslie Amestoy and Roger Beasley, Practical Move has won 5 of 8 starts and earned $923,200. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
